Luxury Holidays At Elsa's Kopje

Elsa’s Kopje is named in honour of the eponymous lioness portrayed in the film, ‘Born Free’, and the lodge is built just above the site of George Adamson’s original camp. The accommodation is elegant and very luxurious, created using natural materials to blend beautifully unobtrusively into the surrounding rocky crags. Each cottage is open-fronted, with a private deck or sitting room, and all enjoy panoramic views of the majestic African plains stretching away as far as the eye can see. Such proximity to the bush creates a tangible thrill, perfectly complemented by the indulgent pleasures of an infinity-edge swimming pool, butler service, fine dining and even a small spa.

Elsa's Kopje sits remotely in Meru National Park amongst rugged and untamed terrain. The park has an enormous diversity of habitat and wildlife, and much of the area's success can be credited to the late George Adamson and his workers (past and present) who have, literally, given life back to Meru National Park from the ravaging of poaching in the 1980s and 1990s. Now, the park is home to lions, elephants, buffalo, Reticulated Giraffes, Grevy's Zebra, Gerenuk Antelope, Somali Ostrich and Beisa Oryx, as well as an 84km2 rhino sanctuary. Guests can enjoy day and night game-drives, guided walks, fishing trips and bush sundowners whilst absorbing the infectious spirit of Elsa's Kopje.

Culture & History

In 1964 Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna first travelled to Kenya to star in the groundbreaking film, 'Born Free', which told the true story of George and Joy Adamson raising an orphaned lion cub. The couple were forced to give Elsa away to a zoo or release the lioness back into the wild. Joy made the courageous decision to release the cub back into the wild, thus changing public perception of zoos forever. The premature death of Pole Pole the elephant in London Zoo, that the couple campaigned to keep in the wild, sparked the formation of the Born Free Foundation in 1984 and in 1999, Elsa's Kopje was opened by Dr Richard Leaky (chairman of KWS) and Virginia McKenna.
