A long chain of islands located off the northern end of the Antarctic Peninsula, the South Shetland Islands are one of the most popular spots to visit when travelling through Antarctica.
The largest of the South Shetland Islands, and one of the most populated locations in Antarctica, King George Island features the bases of twelve different countries and is often the place you’ll board your cruise ship upon arrival and departure. Deception Island is home to one of the world's safest natural harbours, as well as one of Antarctica’s two most active volcanoes, which last erupted in 1992. If you fancy testing the Antarctic waters for yourself, Pendulum Cove offers unusually mild temperatures thanks to geothermal heating. On Livingston Island, Hannah Point is a popular nesting spot for Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins, whilst the area also offers beautiful beaches that are much loved by Elephant and Fur Seals. Many other smaller islands, including Penguin Island and Half Moon Island, are worth visiting in search of wonderful wildlife and remote beauty.
