Luxury Holidays At Wallawwa

The elegant rooms in this lovingly restored 200-year-old Colonial manor house, complete with broad pillared verandas, retain their original period features, enhanced with luxurious details and contemporary pops of colour. Situated amidst five acres of manicured tropical gardens with an outdoor pool and soothing spa, Wallawwa is the perfect stopover for your first or last night in this magnificent country. Dine on international dishes served with an Asian twist, either at the side of the lawn or on the sienna-stoned terrace, beneath the open skies; unwind with a signature massage containing just a hint of Ayruveda at the Z Spa, or discover an unexpected literary delight in the cosy Library. Guests can cool off in the Indian stone pool in a quiet corner of the gardens or purchase unusual gifts in the shop, the profits from which go to local charities.

Culture & History

Boasting a rich and fascinating history, The Wallawwa dates back to the 18th century and was more recently occupied by the Royal Air Force during 1939-1945. In addition to its own captivating past, the manor is just short drive to Sri Lanka's capital; the absorbing guided walks around the city's rich colonial fort area and vibrant Pettah market district are both informative and fun, whilst the streets are dotted with emerging art galleries and religious buildings. Further afield, make for the little-visited Buddhist Pilikuttuwa Rajamaha Temple, or take a day trip to walk with elephants and visit a small tea factory at Kegalle.

Hotel Experiences

One of the world's largest exporters of tea, Sri Lanka's history is synonymous with the emerald tea estates that pepper the island. The Wallawwa's wonderful, complimentary High Tea - served in your room, on the veranda or out on the lawns - allows you to sample locally sourced, single-estate teas alongside delicious homemade scones, sandwiches and cakes.

Luxury Beach

Just a short drive away from the tropical gardens in which The Wallawwa nestles, experience the beauty of Sri Lanka's coastline - characterised by spectacular stretches of golden sand and the turquoise, warm waters of the Indian Ocean. For rising headlands, deep coves and dramatic bays, head for the south and west coast of the island, while the east houses flatter, longer beaches shaded by sugar palms. The calmer, sheltered waters are ideal for sea swimming after a morning soaking up the sun, whilst larger waves in certain spots make Sri Lanka a surfer's paradise.

Spa Breaks

The Wallawwa has many quiet and contemplative public areas, both inside and out, but none more so than the Z Spa. There are no set opening times - the team are flexible and cater to guests’ arrival and departure times. Experts in Shiatzu, Balinese Deep Tissue and Sports Massage, their magic hands will help relax and unwind. For those that wish it, a basic yoga session is held in the garden every morning.
