Remotely located in the heart of Peru's verdant Sacred Valley of The Incas, Rio Sagrado, A Belmond Hotel, Sacred Valley is perfect for relaxation and nestles peacefully between a lush mountain backdrop and the Urubamba River. It also offers the ideal base for exploration of the valley and for visiting the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, which can be found less than two hours away by train. The hotel's sympathetically designed exterior, constructed of stone and timber, brings to mind a traditional Andean village and this architectural theme continues in the interior spaces, which feature whitewashed walls, timber floors, traditional stonework and tastefully styled smatterings of brightly coloured Andean soft furnishings and artefacts. Culture & History

Jewelled by incredible Inca ruins and charming towns, the region provides an abundance of cultural delights. Traces of Inca settlements are evident throughout the region, especially in Ollantaytambo, which has been inhabited since the 13th century and is dominated by two massive Inca ruins that provide the best preserved example of Incan city planning. Rio Sagrado is also perfect for travelling to the enchanting UNESCO World Heritage Site and 'New Wonder of the World', Machu Picchu, the most familiar icon of the Incan civilisation, which can be reached via a two-hour train journey.

Mayu Wilka spa is open from 9am until 9pm daily and offers a collection of massage treatments, therapies and even holistic fitness classes. Apart from the cultural attractions in and around the valley, the area offers the perfect playground for adventure. River rafting down the rapids of the Urubamba River might appeal, supplemented by a fortifying al fresco picnic lunch afterwards, or how about enjoying a horse-riding excursion atop a Peruvian Paso, which reputedly offer the smoothest ride of all the world's horses? The hotel recommends three circuits, which are perfect for two people and allow for exploration of the local neighbourhood and surrounding countryside, including the town of Maras, famous for its striking, terraced salt evaporation ponds, which are located just a kilometre from town. Mountain-bikes are available for hire from the hotel and provide an alternative mode of transport from which to enjoy the splendid scenery.
