Chengdu, which sits on the edge of the red basin in China's Sichuan province, is well-known for being one of the favoured cities in China to live; perhaps because it enjoys a laid-back vibe, an uncommonly large amount of inner-city green spaces and is within close proximity to the Panda Research Centre. Of course, these are all good reasons to visit Chengdu, as well. Visitors should be aware that Chengdu is notorious for having little or no sunshine throughout the year.
CHI, The Spa is a peaceful sanctuary comprising eleven private spa suites and herbal steam facilities. Following traditional Asian therapies which focus on ‘Chi’ – an inner force which Chinese philosophy states must flow freely to aid wellbeing and prevent illness – encourages movement through body massage, hydrotherapy, meditation and gentle exercise. Try the Yin and Yang Harmonising Balance, which uses deep, rhythmical massage to release tension and restore inner peace.
A must-visit in Chengdu is the amazing Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, currently home to nearly 120 Giant Pandas and 76 Red Pandas. The conservation strives to breed, raise and protect the endangered Giant Panda, and, as the national emblem of China, the threat of their extinction has encouraged an increase in the effort to save them. The sanctuary is constructed around natural scenery and man-made landscapes, to ensure comfortable living space for the pandas and good sighting opportunities for visitors. For the very best viewing opportunities, do try to arrive early morning when the pandas are more awake; by midday, the pandas like nothing more than a long, leisurely afternoon on their backs!!
