Location and transfer
In the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia. One hour flight from Vancouver to Bella Coola followed by a 40-minute drive to the lodge.
Ten log and timber frame chalets are located in a meadow on the edge of the forest, close to the Atnarko River and the lodge’s unique wildlife viewing platform, ideally positioned for watching grizzly bears feeding in the river. Loft Chalets and the Grizzly Log Chalet have a cosy main bedroom and en suite bathroom downstairs as well as an additional mezzanine loft sleeping area, ensuring that couples, groups of friends and families can all feel perfectly at home. Wood panelling and local artwork add to the cabins’ rustic charm, whilst modern facilities include mobile phone docking stations, complimentary Wi-Fi, a fridge, coffee maker, air-conditioning, and a gas fireplace. Private porch areas look out over the grounds and allow you to enjoy the best of the local wildlife from the comfort of your cabin. The Pika Duplex consists of two self-contained suites next to each other, which can either be booked separately or together to accommodate families or groups of friends. Pika 1 sleeps two adults in a king bed, whilst Pika 2 can sleep two adults and two children in two queen beds. The suites have the same rustic character as the other chalets and large picture windows to frame the outstanding views.
Meals are served in the cosy main lodge and menus incorporate delicious local and regional produce. A breakfast buffet includes both continental and cooked options, lunch can be taken at the lodge or packaged up to enjoy whilst out exploring, and a three-course dinner features the best of the local produce, often including wild seafood caught nearby. Take a seat around the roaring fire before or after dinner to meet and swap stories with your fellow guests.
A wide range of adventure and wildlife viewing activities are on offer for guests, making the most of the spectacular scenery and local flora and fauna. Drift down the Atnarko River on a boat taking in the mountain views and searching for eagles, otters and bears, enjoy far-reaching views of the Bella Coola Valley on an adrenaline-fuelled Via Ferrata climb, or marvel at the bird’s-eye view across mountains and forest on a heli-sightseeing or heli-hiking tour. Guided hikes, river fishing, and mountain biking are other options for exploring the local area, whilst back at the lodge there are communal spaces for downtime including a bar with cosy fireplace, a games area with billiards, foosball and dartboard, and satellite TV. After time in the Canadian wilderness, aching limbs will be grateful for the large hot tub, cedar sauna and massage room, part of the 1,200 square foot spa building at the lodge.
From early September until mid-October the main focus at the lodge is on grizzly bear viewing packages with three night/four day experiences that make the most of this incredible time of year. Join experienced guides on river boats and guided walks to spot these magnificent creatures in the wild as they gorge on the local spawning salmon.
The lodge offers a unique wildlife viewing platform, allowing you to watch bears hunting salmon in the Atnarko River from a safe place whenever you choose. Just a short stroll from the lodge’s cabins, this elevated platform offers a fantastic view over the river just a few steps away.
The surrounding rainforest is rich in all kinds of wildlife, and black bears, otters, mountains goats, wolves and a variety of birds including birds of prey also call this area home.
