Luxury Holidays At Hoanib Skeleton Coast

Positioned on the edge of the transient Hoanib River, in one of the most remote areas of the Kaokoveld, with access to both the haunting loveliness of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast and the Palmwag Reserve’s game-viewing territory, the Hoanib Skeleton Coast Lodge is ideal for the modern adventurer or photographer in search of evocative landscapes and unusual wildlife - the area is home to over 98% of the world's population of rare black rhino. Hoanib Lodge’s seven twin tents and one family tent, blend effortlessly with the stark landscape, their decidedly minimalist décor a perfect reflection of the location. Accessible only by light-aircraft, a longer stay is recommended to obtain the most satisfaction from your stay which includes game drives onto the previously inaccessible Hoanib floodplains, guided walks and scenic flights, and explorations of the Skeleton Coast, a vast surreal wilderness home to shipwrecks and bleached whale skeletons.

Morning and/or afternoon drives game drives, taken in open 4 x 6-seater Land Cruisers, along the Hoanib River and floodplains, Mudorib Spring and south into the Palmwag Concession, showcase the magnitude of the landscape, providing opportunities to view the desert-adapted lion and elephant as well as the elusive shaggy brown hyena, the black-backed jackal and the roaming oryx, giraffe and springbok.

Wildlife Encounters

Wander through Palmwag Reserve on a nature walk that provides a great opportunity to study small creatures, as well as fascinating plant life such as the ancient Welwitschia plant. Take day trips to see the magnificent Klein Oase and Auses Spring, a fascinating respite from the dry desert, and watch the wildlife and abundant birdlife coming to quench their thirst, or enjoy a Skeleton Coast excursion, travelling in a 4x4 to the magnificent rocky coastline with its huge Cape Fur Seal colony and shipwrecks, via the wilderness and wildlife of the reserve.

Hotel Experiences

Guests staying for longer (3 to 5 nights) may enjoy a scenic flight excursion (weather permitting) over massive dunefields, the Auses Spring and the Hoanib floodplains to the rugged Skeleton coastline with its seal colony and shipwrecks.
