Scenery
The northern Sierra Nevada is extraordinarily beautiful and a true highlight is Emerald Bay State Park, comprising a stunning teardrop cove flanked by granite cliffs. The lake’s waters are spectacular, changing from a shade of leafy green to pale jade as the sun repositions – for the perfect shot, find Inspiration Point, an ideally located vista. Additionally, look out for Fannette Island, a speck of rock that used to allure the glamorous guests of famed heiress, Lora Knight, in the 1920s. For jaw-dropping views of the whole Tahoe Basin, Desolation Wilderness and Carson Valley, hop aboard the Heavenly Gondola cable car, or head west into the stark, surreal landscapes of El Dorado National Park.
Events
Be sure to take a trip to Harveys Outdoor Arena, a lakeside, alfresco concert venue showcasing the hottest global acts – big names like Elton John, Paul Simon and Lady Gaga have all performed here. Other popular events include the Rock Tahoe Half Marathon, the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship Tournament and the Lights on the Lake Fireworks Show, an extravaganza of firecrackers and rockets exploding into the night skies to celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July.
Outdoor Activities
Reconnect with nature as you enjoy Nevada’s year-round outdoor adventures, such as scenic boat rides and fishing charters, or embrace the winter’s terrific snow-sports - from cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling, to snow shoeing and sledding. A top pick for experienced skiers is the ‘Heavenly’ peak, boasting endless skiable terrain (one run measures 5.5 miles!) alongside glorious lake and desert views; uniquely looking out across two states, ski the Nevada side in the morning and the California side after lunch. Those holidaying in summer can pick from water-sports, hiking, biking, climbing, horse riding, tubing, zip-lining, and not to mention world-class golf. Alternatively, simply stretch out on a lakefront beach and soak up the Nevadan sunshine.
History
Follow the steep, scenic trail to Vikingsholm Castle, an eccentric mansion on the shore of stunning Emerald Bay, officially featured on the National Register of Historic Places. A cutting-edge creation of ancient Scandi-style architecture, the house was built by Lora Knight to reflect its surrounding natural beauty, featuring turf-clad roofs and wild spring flowers. Alternatively, visit Tallac Historic Site, resting on the excavated grounds of an old holiday retreat, once flocked to by San Francisco’s high society at the turn of the 20th century. Today, you will find a charming community arts centre and small museum. Nearby, discover the Pope Estate, offering more glorious art and guided tours, whilst the Lake Tahoe Historical Society Museum exhibits interesting artefacts from the area’s pioneering past.
