Top 5 Best American Golfers of All Time

Check out our rundown of the top 5 best American golfers of all time to see if your favourite sports star has made it onto our list.

The United States of America is a colossus in the golfing world, having produced more than its fair share of golfing legends over the years. From commercial innovators such as Mark McCormack and Clifford Roberts, to players who dominated the sport such as Jack Nicholaus and Tiger Woods, golf would be a much poorer place if it weren't for our friends across the pond.
However, it is the players we will be focusing on in this blog post which has been put together by the golfing enthusiasts on the Elegant Resorts team. We challenged them to come up with a list of the top 5 best American golfers of all time based on the players achievements, longevity and ultimately the influence they have had on the wider sport. From multiple champions to unforgettable personalities, here's our pick of the top best American golfers of all time:

1. Jack Nicklaus

When discussing the best American golfers of all time, you simply have to include Jack Nicklaus in the conversation. Nicknamed the 'Golden Bear' having been described as a "Big, cuddly golden bear" by an Australia journalist in 1961, Nicklaus won a remarkable 18 major championships during his career, a record that remains one of the most celebrated achievements in professional golf to this day.
Nicklaus won the Masters 6 times, the US Open 4 times, the Open Championship 3 times and the PGA Championship 5 times. His longevity was equally remarkable, with his final major victory coming at the 1986 Masters at the age of 46 some 24 years after his first in 1962.
Beyond the numbers, Nicklaus was renowned for his powerful driving, strategic course management and ability to perform under pressure. His rivalry with Arnold Palmer helped propel professional golf into a new era of popularity, while his influence continues through his work as a golf course designer and mentor for the future generations of American golfing superstars.

2. Tiger Woods

If Nicklaus represents golf's ultimate record breaker, then Tiger Woods represents one of the greatest periods of dominance the sport has ever witnessed. Woods transformed professional golf through his extraordinary athleticism, mental strength and ability to produce spectacular performances when the pressure was at its greatest.
He has won 15 major championships, including 5 Masters titles, and became the youngest player to complete the career Grand Slam in 2000 at the age of 24. His 2000-01 period was particularly extraordinary, when he simultaneously held all 4 major golf championship titles at the same time!
Woods also played an enormous role in bringing a new generation of fans to golf. His impact extended well beyond the golf course, making him one of the most recognisable sporting figures in the world and therefore an obvious choice to add to our list of the best American golfers of all time. Only his more recent off course controversies ultimately held him back from claiming our top spot.

3. Arnold Palmer

Few golfers have done more to increase the popularity of the sport than Arnold Palmer. Known affectionately as The King on account of his unmatched charisma, Palmer combined exceptional golfing ability with an approachable personality that made him one of America's most beloved sporting heroes.
However, it wasn't all about his personality. His playing ability was pretty special too with a "go-for-broke" playing style that was thrilling to watch. His career included 7 major championships, with 4 Masters victories, 2 Open Championship triumphs and 1 US Open title.
Of course, Palmer's importance cannot be measured by trophies alone. His swashbuckling style of play and enormous popularity helped professional golf reach a much wider audience during the 1950s and 1960s when the sport was first starting to be beamed into living rooms across the world via Television for the first time.
Palmer also helped establish the framework for the modern golf celebrity, with his influence extending into business, golf course design and charitable work. His legacy remains an essential part of America's golfing history.

4. Ben Hogan

Ben Hogan's place among the best American golfers is built upon extraordinary skill, determination and one of the most remarkable comebacks in sporting history. Hogan won 9 major championships, including 4 US Opens, 2 Masters and 2 PGA Championships.
His career was interrupted by a serious car accident in 1949, leaving many people uncertain whether he would ever play competitive golf again. Yet Hogan returned and produced one of the greatest comeback stories seen in any sport, winning the 1950 US Open just 16 months after the accident.
Known for his precise ball striking and meticulous approach to practice, Hogan became an icon of technical excellence. His influence on golf instruction and the mechanics of the swing remains significant to modern golfers to this very day.

5. Sam Snead

Rounding out our list of the best American golfers in 5th is Sam Snead, whose extraordinary longevity and consistency made him one of the defining figures of American golf during the 20th century. Snead won 7 major championships, including 3 Masters titles and 3 PGA Championships.
He was renowned for his beautifully fluid swing, which became one of the most admired movements in golf. Snead's longevity was equally impressive, with the American competing in major tournaments for more than 50 years from 1934 until the mid 1980s. His love of the sport ensured that he simply couldn't keep himself away despite his last PGA Tour victory having come in 1965 at the age of 52.
While his major championship tally places him behind the four other players ahead of him on this list of the best American golfers, Snead's combination of natural talent, longevity and influence means that he was more than deserving of a place in our top 5.
