When I stepped aboard Explora I for my latest trip, I wasn't too sure what to expect. Launched just three years ago as the first ship in Explora Journeys' fleet, she represents MSC Group's ambitious move into the world of luxury cruising.
I knew the brand was rapidly gaining a reputation alongside established names such as Silversea, Seabourn and Regent Seven Seas, three cruise lines I've been fortunate enough to sail with and have loved for different reasons. And after spending a week onboard, I knew Explora I was going to be just as special. The first thing that struck me was how little the ship actually felt like a cruise ship. Instead, it felt like a beautifully designed luxury hotel that happened to be sailing through the Mediterranean.

Every space has been carefully considered. There are plenty of people onboard, yet nowhere ever feels crowded. Equally, the ship never feels empty. Whether you're enjoying a quiet coffee, lounging by the pool or heading for dinner, there's a wonderfully calm atmosphere throughout. Explora attracts a noticeably younger crowd than many traditional luxury cruise lines, with most guests seeming to be in their mid-40s and beyond. The atmosphere felt refreshingly relaxed, and luxury was never something that was imposed or performed. Instead, it simply flowed through every part of the experience. There were also plenty of multi-generational families onboard, with grandparents, parents and children all finding their own way to enjoy life at sea.
One evening perfectly captured that balance. As we sailed away from port, the Sky Bar transformed into the social heart of the ship. A DJ and saxophonist created an infectious energy as guests gathered to dance, chat and toast the evening ahead. Yet just a short stroll away, Astern Lounge offered a completely different mood. Quiet, elegant and unhurried, it provided the perfect escape for anyone seeking a more peaceful evening.

Explora I Balcony
One of my favourite memories happened during the FIFA World Cup. The retractable roof over the Conservatory Pool had been closed, creating a cosy atmosphere as a giant screen broadcast the match. Blankets were draped across loungers, lights twinkled around the space, and guests settled in with drinks to watch the game. Some sipped champagne, others cheered on their teams, but everyone seemed completely at ease. It was stylish, welcoming and unlike anything I'd experienced onboard a ship before.
Explora's philosophy centres around finding your own "Ocean State of Mind", and nowhere is that more evident than in its wellness offering. Complimentary yoga, breathwork and sound bath sessions are available throughout the voyage, while more tailored programmes focus on sleep, nutrition, fitness and overall wellbeing. Cruising may not traditionally be associated with wellness retreats, but Explora is challenging that perception in a very convincing way.
Food is undoubtedly one of the brand's greatest strengths. With nine distinct dining venues, every meal feels like a different experience. The Emporium Marketplace completely redefines what a buffet can be. Forget long queues and trays sitting under heat lamps. Here, dishes are freshly prepared to order in beautifully designed open kitchens, creating a dining experience that feels both elevated and relaxed. Even during busier periods, it never felt crowded. A personal favourite was the Oyster Bar. Returning from a morning exploring ashore and settling in with fresh oysters and a glass of champagne quickly became one of our favourite rituals. It perfectly summed up the effortless sense of indulgence that defines life onboard.

Explora I Overview
While Explora is often seen as an adults-focused brand, families are exceptionally well catered for. The Nautilus Club welcomes children and teenagers up to 17 years old and stays open until midnight, giving younger guests plenty of freedom and flexibility. Alongside gaming consoles, libraries and organised activities, there are also programmes centred around sustainability, ocean conservation and protecting the planet, adding an educational element to the experience.
Explora I totally exceeded my expectations. Every detail feels considered, from the design and service to the dining, wellness and entertainment. Rather than trying to replicate what existing luxury cruise lines already do well, Explora has created its own vision of modern luxury: sophisticated but never intimidating, relaxed but never lacking in service. If traditional luxury cruising represents timeless elegance, Explora feels like its natural next chapter. For travellers seeking the comfort and refinement of a world-class luxury hotel combined with the excitement of discovering multiple destinations, Explora Journeys has created something truly special. I left feeling rested, inspired and already thinking about where an Explora voyage might take me next.
