The United States of America offers endless appeal for families. This wonderfully diverse country has an answer for everyone, from sprawling theme parks and sensational cities, to beautiful beaches and natural wonders. Easily accessible, and almost guaranteed to please all ages, a luxury family holiday to the United States is the perfect place to give children a holiday to cherish for years to come. With so much to choose from, finding a starting point can feel like a challenge, so we have put together some of our suggestions, though feel free to explore our full United States of America portfolio to spark your own American dream.
Nothing says ‘family holiday’ quite like Florida. The Sunshine State is an epicentre of theme parks, beaches and sub-tropical curiosities, and is perfect for your child’s first visit to the USA.
Orlando It may seem like stating the obvious, but Orlando really is the ultimate family holiday destination. With easy direct flights, this is a great option for children’s first big trip outside of Europe, especially when they hear what is waiting for them across the Atlantic! The colossal Walt Disney World® Resort needs no introduction, with its four fantastic theme parks that leave children dizzy with excitement, while the dazzling attractions of Universal Studios, and rumbling rollercoasters at adjacent sister park, Islands of Adventure, are perfect for teens and film fans alike. Whichever park you choose for the day, always make the effort to stay for the nightly fireworks displays – they are nothing short of spectacular.
Miami The renowned Miami Beach is one of the most sought after summer spots in the United States, with powdery sands and divinely warm waters – though, if staying here, families may prefer to stick to the slightly less crowded central area. A short drive out of the city, over the Rickenbacker Causeway, will lead you to Key Biscayne, a beautiful National Park, where you can spend the day cycling, kayaking or fishing in this island paradise, or take an off-shore snorkelling trip for a peek at the third largest coral reef in the world. Journey down to the southernmost point of the pan-handle, and discover Everglades National Park – great for an adventure into the wilderness, where an airboat ride through the lush realm of swampy waters will have little ones keenly keeping an eye out for lurking alligators and crocodiles.
There’s fun for all ages in California, a state simply made for a road trip. If you can’t decide between the north and the south, a tailor-made itinerary holiday is ideal for helping your family get the most out of this delightfully laid-back state.
The North Visiting San Francisco is essential when in north California, where zipping up the hillside in the historic cable cars, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and riding a ferry out to haunting Alcatraz are just a few of the highlights. Union Square is the top spot for shopping, where the whole family will love feasting on syrupy pancakes, while there are plenty of eateries and activities down on Pier 39, where visitors of all ages will love watching the sea-lions hop up on the harbour platforms for a snooze in the summer months. An easy driving distance away is the classic beach at Santa Cruz and the fabulous aquarium of Monterey Bay, while if you venture into the interior, the stunning Yosemite National Park is a must-do for outdoor adventures, such as hiking, biking, climbing or kayaking.
The South Southern California is where the biggest theme parks of the state are found, boasting Disneyland® Resort, Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott’s Berry Farm, offering endless family fun. It also has the ultimate beaches; Santa Monica is iconic for its ferris wheel-topped pier and work-out parade of Muscle Beach, while teenagers will love Huntington Beach, known as Surf City USA, where they will be aching to jump into the waves or chill around a fire pit. San Diego is also worth a visit, with a fantastic zoo, museums at Balboa Park and LEGOLAND® Resort.
New York and Boston
The east coast and New England area is historic and cultural, offering plenty of appeal for image conscious teenagers, who will love the hip ‘vibe’ plus scenes they’ve seen countless times in their favourite music videos. Perfect for half term trips, be prepared to do some serious shopping – this is the capital of preppy American style!
New York Great for keeping teenagers happy, New York combines city-cool with a family-friendly holiday. From the classic sights of Liberty Island and the Empire State building, to the artistic suburb of Tribeca and trendy Brooklyn, there’s something to keep everyone happy, and countless free events, concerts and festivals throughout summer. If you have younger children in tow, a day spent at Central Park Zoo, marvelling at dinosaur skeletons at American Museum of Natural History or simply seeking out a slice of pizza and donuts for a picnic in the park is a fail-proof formula. Times Square is a fabulous stop for the evening, where kids will be drawn like magnets to M&M’s World®! Whether it’s a show on Broadway or an all-American diner, there’s plenty to enjoy a great night together.
Boston While sunny in summer, Boston is most stunning during autumn, when the leaves of trees in the many parks and public spaces turn to spectacular shades of orange and red – making this an ideal destination for October half term breaks. A tour of Fenway Park, home to the beloved Red Sox baseball team, will be a real treat for sports fans, even more so if you manage to catch a game in full swing – you mustn’t forget to try a hotdog! Colonial brownstone houses and charming cobbled streets are fantastic for bike rides along the river, while boat trips from the historic Boston Harbour can prompt an intriguing history lesson, and, while it’s almost compulsory to try Boston culinary classics of lobster or New England chowder, picky children will be easily satisfied with delicious pizzerias in Little Italy.
