Our team of staff at our Barbados Office have tried and tested lots of activities and experiences so that Elegant Resorts can recommend ones to suit you. If you’re a self-confessed history addict − or even if you’re not − the next time you’re on a luxury holiday in Barbados you should do the Garrison Tour.

Mary, Sophia and Sandrine from our Barbados Office had heard it was a top attraction on the island, but now that they’ve experienced it for themselves, they’re in no doubt. One Wednesday morning (the only time that group tours are available) the girls joined their Guides for a three-hour journey back in time through the Garrison UNESCO World Heritage Site, where some buildings date back to 1650. The tour offers an insight into how the Garrison was influenced by Cromwell, George Washington and The American War of Independence, and is brought to life along the way with plenty of interesting stories.

The tour begins with a short film about George Washington’s visit to Barbados in 1751 to set the scene, before visiting George Washington House where George − aged nineteen years old − spent six weeks of his life. It’s kitted out with original furniture and period details including coral dripstones that were used to cool and purify water. The girls then hopped into an air-conditioned mini-bus and were driven around fascinating sites including the remains of Charles Fort − where several original cannons are visible in the sea below the walls; the Military Cemetery − home to the grave of the ‘Father of Independence’ of Barbados, former Prime Minister Errol Barrow; and the Military Museum, in the grounds of St Anne’s Fort, used by the Barbados Defence Force − where exhibits include the original Barbados flag that was hoisted at the Garrison on Independence Day in 1966.

Their grand tour culminated with the Ceremonial Changing of the Sentry in front of the landmark red clock tower. The guards were dressed in the historic uniform chosen by Queen Victoria and put on a fabulous display of marching and drumming. This traditional ceremony takes place every Wednesday at 11.45am, so bear in mind if you visit on any other day, you will not see it.
