Twenty Best Places to Visit in March - Venice
Posted: 03 March 2017
As spring begins to stir, March marks the beginning of a new travel season, opening up new destinations for you to discover. City breaks and ski escapes await, along with sunny skies and alluring ventures into the wilderness, offering an exciting way to break away from any lingering winter blues.
Escape to the city for spring, and reap the benefit of mild temperatures without the crowds of summer obstructing your way to your favourite landmarks – or the heat of concrete jungles becoming too oppressive!
In Europe, March is a fabulous time to visit the grand ancient spectacles of Rome, where if you do encounter an odd drizzly day, you can head to the spectacular Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel or one of the many prestigious art galleries. It’s a similar story in Florence – late March is when spring starts to stir, but unpredictable weather needn’t hamper your holiday with the fantastic Uffizi Gallery to explore.
Still in Italy, Venice might carry a little of its winter chill, but spring is clearly on its way as the sun begins to break through and flowers begin to bloom. You may still need to take a coat, but arriving before the Easter crowds means your choice will really pay off, and any cool afternoons can be spent tucked away in the city’s cosy interiors. Dubrovnik, one of Europe’s increasingly popular destinations, is peaceful and quiet in March, allowing you to explore the beautiful Old Town and medieval walls to your heart’s content.
There are stateside city breaks to be enjoyed, too. Scottsdale may not jump to mind as quickly as the east-coast darling, New York, but if you want to shop ‘til you drop, indulge in taste bud-tingling Mexican street food and be fascinated by Native American culture and legends of the frontier, along with stopping for a game of golf at one of the two-hundred desert courses, this may be the place for you in March. If you’d rather throw some sand into the mix, Miami heats up during this month, offering a chance to soak up some sun as well as discover the Cuban and Art Deco flair of the city.
While some people are always looking to escape the cold, others are seeking it out with dreams of a luxurious ski getaway. It may be late in the season, but sparkling slopes, glistening under bright blue skies, make this a fabulous way to spend a quick break in March.
Saas-Fee is our latest featured ski destination in Europe – hidden in the Swiss Alps, this treasured resort offers runs at an exceptionally high altitude, making for more reliable snow conditions. Across the Atlantic, Colorado can boast some of the best ski resorts in North America and, along with family-friendly Whistler in Canada, offers reliable snowfall and a fabulous après-ski scene to pass the time when the slopes have closed for the day.
The sun is always shining somewhere in the world! If all you have on your mind is sea and sand, it is never too early in the year to seek out your place in the sun. Close to home, the Canary Islands have long since been one of Europe’s first choices for rejuvenating under the year-round sunshine, while their diverse landscapes make hiking, wildlife spotting and watersports fabulously catered to. For something with a little bit of tropical flair, the Caribbean will be calling, whether you want to relax on the platinum beaches of Barbados, enjoy the vibrant character of Anguilla or admire the natural beauty of St Lucia.
Further afield, Hawaii never fails to disappoint, with its volcanic allure, laid-back island vibes and year-round pleasant climate. After all, when is it a bad time to spend an afternoon catching some waves before watching the sun set to the gentle luau rhythms? Mexico is also deliciously warm, where divers can swim their way to happiness with one of the world’s largest reefs – the Great Mayan Reef – covering over one-thousand kilometres of the stunning coastline.
Beach-lovers will also be elated to hear that March is a perfect time to visit the Maldives, offering some of the islands’ hottest temperatures of the year, plus minimal chance of rainfall, and nine hours of sunshine – what’s not to love?
If you are wild at heart, branch out for a cultural adventure or take a journey into the wilderness to make your March a month to remember. South America should be on your list of places to see, especially Peru and Argentina. Peru is just emerging from its rainy season, meaning visitors can expect greener scenery and fewer crowds, plus the Inca Trail will have just reopened from its annual February restoration closure, while Machu Picchu can be seen by train if conditions are too unpredictable for hiking. March is also a wonderful time to visit Argentina, when the summer months are just drawing to a close, making for warm temperatures and picturesque trekking. While here, you can also visit cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, which will be enjoying sunny skies over its magnificent architecture.
March is also a fabulous time to visit Vancouver and Vancouver Island. This area boasts beautiful spring months as flowers begin to bloom and the sun breaks through the clouds, and wildlife viewing is perfectly timed for seeing Grizzly Bears awakening from hibernation. Dubai, meanwhile, boasts perfect weather for enjoying desert adventures. While summer heat makes embarking into the dusty landscape a challenging thought, the more comfortable spring weather offers the ideal conditions for a safari into the sands.
