Rwanda’s capital Kigali is a wonderfully clean, green low-rise city, boasting an exceptional local arts scene and plenty to explore. Join an expert guide for a tour of the city, with highlights including local artisans’ workshops, art galleries, the Rwanda National Museum and the moving Genocide Memorial, that respectfully remembers the victims of the Rwandan Genocide of 1994. Akagera National Park hugs the border with Tanzania, boasting a varied landscape of woodland, mountains, savannah and swaps. Within this, a range of wildlife awaits – including lion, zebra, elephant, hippo and giraffe – as well as a breathtaking diversity of birds. Head out on game drives – either in the morning, afternoon or at night – and walking safaris with expert guides, in search of the amazing animals. What’s more, over 500 bird species have been recorded in Akagera, making it a paradise for bird watchers. Magashi Camp overlooks the beautiful waters of Lake Rwanyakazinga, making boating and catch-and-release fishing other fantastic ways to spend your time.

Volcanoes National Park – one of the oldest on the African continent – is where Rwanda’s famous mountain gorillas reside, a species with which we share around 98% of our DNA! Join an expert guide and tracker (many of which have lived in or near the park their entire lives) as you trek in search of these incredible animals, learning more about their unique behaviours and conservation. Other activities to enjoy while you’re here include a cycle around scenic lakes, river canoeing, and a hike to Mount Bisoke, marvelling at its deep crater lake. You can also visit the mysterious Buhanga Eco Park, a small sacred forest that houses ancient trees, sacred springs, a range of birds and butterflies, and an enchanting network of walking trails.

Your final destination is the gloriously green Nyungwe Forest National Park, characterised by lush jungle, bamboo forests and tea terraces shrouded in mist. From your base of One&Only Nyungwe House, head into the ancient rainforest. Enjoy the thrilling Canopy Walk, coming face-to-face with primates, butterflies and birds, before trekking along the wonderful waterfall trail. Nyungwe is home to 310 species of bird, making a dedicated bird-watching excursion a must. You can also hike the park’s highest peak, Bigugu. If it's a clear day, you may enjoy views of Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Back at the hotel, a range of authentically Rwandan experiences await – from tea picking to hilltop archery.

With only an estimated 880 gorillas left in the wild worldwide, to see these gentle creatures in their natural habitat is a truly unique moment. Gorillas make their homes in and amongst the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains, in the Volcanoes National Park of northern Rwanda. After a trek into the mountains, you’ll be introduced by your expert trackers to a fully-habituated families of mountain gorillas. You can stay with these animals for an awe-inspiring hour, often crouching just a few feet away, whilst the gorillas go about their daily lives.
Hikes in the mountains can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours, depending on the gorilla family allocated to your group, and their location. The journey back can take just as long, but you are often carried along by the euphoria you feel at seeing the gorillas! Expert guides give a pre-trek briefing on specific protocols and rules for visiting the gorillas, that live within an altitude of 2500 and 4000m. Porters are available to help carry backpacks and cameras, as well as helping you with your footing along your hike, which can be hard work - but well, well worth it!
As well as trekking among the rich landscape of Volcanoes National Park, the area can be explored by both boat and bicycle. Join a guided, gentle cycling excursion around one of the area’s many lakes – including gigantic Lake Kivu – before gliding along the river by canoe, keeping your eyes peeled for the area’s fantastic flora and fauna.
While in Volcanoes National Park, take a guided hike up the dormant Mount Bisoke, the summit of which boasts a spectacular crater lake and stunning views over the ancient rainforest. This fairly strenuous hike takes you through a range of vegetation, offering the opportunity to spot the park’s rare and wonderful wildlife.
Buhanga Sacred Forest is a true hidden gem, located within Volcanoes National Park. Despite its small size (around 31 hectares) the forest is a site of tremendous ecological importance and natural beauty. Walk beneath towering trees along a network of trails entirely from cut lava stones, reaching various observation platforms and spotting a range of wonderful birdlife and butterflies.
Spend a day exploring the glorious greenery of Nyungwe Forest National Park. Highlights include a walk along the Waterfall Trail, a stunning hiking route through primeval rainforest, of which the highlight is a remote waterfall, where you can take a dip to refresh. You can also join a guide for a dedicated birdwatching excursion. With over 300 species recorded here – including many that are endemic - the park is one of the country’s top spots for spotting feathered friends. Finally, you can hike the Bigugu Trail, the highest peak in the park, offering incredible flora and – on a clear day – views of Lake Kivu, as well as hills and islands belonging to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Your time in Nyungwe can be tailored to your interests, mobility and time.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of the greatest allures of visitors to breathtaking Rwanda. This is not only the place for relaxation, but also one for adventure and a true insight into Rwanda‘s natural beauty. The park houses the largest protected mountain forest in Africa, covering between 1600 and 2000 sq. meters and home to an array of incredible wildlife - including its famed chimpanzees. The long drive to remote Nyungwe also gives you the opportunity to drink in the country’s diverse scenery and the imposing landscape, as you approach the main attraction. Once you get to the park you will embark on a true adventure, the unmissable canopy walk. Though it’s a year-round destination with fairly unwavering temperatures, June to September is when Rwanda is at its driest, the best time for spotting the famed mountain gorillas.
