Stark natural beauty combines with a fascinating history in Ushuaia, the Argentinian city where your luxury cruise in Antarctica begins. Spend a night here, before embarking Silver Wind.
Breakfast
A day at sea invites you to experience timeless Silver Wind’s array of facilities – ranging from the serene Zagara Beauty Spa to the elegant Connoisseur’s Corner.
All-Inclusive
Part of the remote and beautiful British-owned Falkland Islands, New Island is a dedicated wildlife and nature reserve, home to rockhopper penguins, blue-eyed shags and some 40 other species of birds. Spend the afternoon discovering West Point Island, the waters surrounding it often swam in by dolphins, while the interior is characterised by rolling moorland and striking cliffs, where Devil’s Nose is a famous colony of black-browed albatross.
The capital of the Falkland Islands, Stanley is a compact, British-influenced town that boasts brightly coloured houses and a sheltered harbour. The shipwreck of the Lady Elizabeth lies not far offshore, while penguins are abundant here with species including gentoo, magellanic and elusive king penguins.
Spend two days cruising the Drake Passage, a waterway renowned for its rough conditions due to the convergence of three seas and the lack of resistance from any other landmass – but well worth it for the delights that await across it.
Your first encounter of the indescribable enchantment of Antarctica is the Antarctic Sound, located at the very top of the peninsula. Prepare to be awed as you come up close to gigantic icebergs and the Larsen Ice Shelf, as well as spotting some of the brilliant birdlife that calls the area home.
Planet Earth’s least explored continent that was only discovered by humans in 1820; get ready to be truly spellbound by the raw beauty and undeniable thrill of the pristine Antarctic Peninsula, dotted with important research bases but little else. Icebergs tower above you, some the size of buildings, and beautiful blue glaciers await your exploration. Alongside Silversea’s expert expedition teams, head out by Zodiac boat or kayak into the region, likely encountering more penguins, humpback whales and a variety of seals, as well as icy landscapes that will blow your mind.
Running parallel to the northwest coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, The South Shetland Islands are home to 16 research stations and the continent’s only hotel. The largest island here is King George, where penguins, gulls, cormorants and giant petrels nest.
Still reeling from your unforgettable Antarctic experience, it’s time to head back across the Drake Passage towards Argentina.
Disembark in Ushuaia and transfer to a luxury hotel, included as part of your Silversea cruise.
The best time to visit Antarctica is between November and March, due to easier access through ice, more daylight and less harsh (though still chilly!) temperatures.
