PRIVATE TOUR

Canada

Cities of Eastern Canada by Rail

13 NIGHTS FROM £3,582 per person

Showcasing the contrasting provinces of English-speaking Ontario and French-speaking Quebec, this independent tour takes you to no fewer than four of Eastern Canada’s most vibrant urban destinations; starting in Toronto and ending in Montreal. You’ll travel effortlessly and comfortably, in business class aboard VIA Rail’s fast and modern rail services, exploring the museums and monuments of Canada’s fascinating capital, Ottawa, and strolling the historic ramparts of Quebec City. We’ve even thrown in an excursion from Toronto to the awe-inspiring Niagara Falls, a truly memorable day complete with lunch, wine tasting experience and your own private driver.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS expand_more

Explore the diverse neighbourhoods of Canada’s largest city, Toronto, and perhaps take in the views across Lake Ontario from the top of the CN Tower.

Cruise to the base of mighty Niagara Falls, and feel the mist on your face as you approach the powerful twin cascades of the American and Horseshoe Falls.

Visit in winter to enjoy snow- and ice-themed activities at Quebec City’s annual carnival, or to skate on Ottawa’s frozen Rideau Canal.

Enjoy fine dining with a French-inspired twist in Montreal’s vibrant restaurant scene, or just tuck into an authentic poutine (chips, cheese curds and gravy), a celebrated favourite of the Quebecois.

Authentic Experience

The fertile soils around Niagara Falls are home to many of Canada’s leading vineyards, from small independents to well-known producers such as Inniskillin, and most invite you to enjoy wine tastings. The region is famous for its ‘ice wines’, where the grapes are left on the vine past the traditional harvest period until the temperature drops to approx. minus 8C. The freezing process concentrates the natural sugars in the fruit.

TOUR DETAILS

    DAY 1-4 DETAILS ACCOMMODATION

Canada’s largest city is a great place to start your trip; it’s a vibrant melting-pot of cultures, languages and ethnic communities and boasts a glorious location on the banks of Lake Ontario, a setting perhaps best appreciated from the top of the iconic CN Tower. It’s a city of contrasting but complementary neighbourhoods – don’t miss the dining and evening entertainment of the revitalised Distillery District, the vintage markets of Kensington and the designer shopping of Yorkville. On Day 3, we’ve included a day trip with a private driver-guide to Niagara Falls, complete with lunch, a wine tasting experience and an unmissable boat ride to the base of the waterfalls.

    TRANSFERS

Fly to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport and take a private car transfer (approx. 30 minutes) to your centrally-located hotel.

    Fairmont Royal York
    • Summary: Historic property; elegant and exclusive throughout
    • Feature: Reimagined dining at Reign, Clockwork and the Library Bar
    • Rooms: 1,363 rooms & suites
    DAY 5-7 DETAILS ACCOMMODATION

In 1857, and doubtlessly to the irritation of the much larger cities of Toronto and Montreal, Queen Victoria announced that Ottawa had been chosen as Canada’s capital. With a strategic setting high above the Ottawa River, it was deemed the perfect place to unite the English- and French-speaking parts of the country (indeed the francophone city of Gatineau sits just across the river). Today, it’s a cosmopolitan city of around one million people, boasting impressive neo-Gothic parliament buildings, a raft of national museums and galleries, vibrant Byward Market and the historic Rideau Canal, which in winter becomes the world’s longest skating rink!

    TRANSFERS

On Day 5, travel in business class aboard VIA Rail’s service from Toronto’s Union Station to Ottawa (journey time approx. 4 hrs 30 mins), and then by taxi (own expense) to your hotel.

    Fairmont Chateau Laurier
    • Summary: Grand hotel inspired by the chateaux of the Loire Valley
    • Feature: Spectacular views of Canada’s parliament buildings
    • Rooms: 429 rooms & suites
    DAY 8-10 DETAILS ACCOMMODATION

Spread along the banks of the mighty St. Lawrence River, this is Canada’s most historic city and the only walled city in North America, earning its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cobbled streets of the atmospheric Upper and Lower Towns are a delight to explore, and the expansive views from the city’s ramparts and star-shaped citadel are breathtaking. Largely francophone, Quebec City’s elegant architecture and thriving café culture are reminiscent of Paris; the pavement tables here invite you to pause your sightseeing plans (or throw them out of the window entirely) and just soak up the irrepressible ‘joie de vivre’.

    TRANSFERS

On Day 8, travel in business class aboard VIA Rail’s service from Ottawa to Quebec City (journey time approx. 5 hrs 30 mins), and then take a short taxi ride (own expense) to your hotel.

    DAY 11-13 DETAILS ACCOMMODATION

The island metropolis of Montreal is a vibrant and multi-dimensional city, and nowhere comes closer to achieving true bilingual status, its four million inhabitants switching effortlessly between English and French. Overlooked by the parks and forests of Mont Royal (from which the city takes its name), the modern skyscrapers of downtown sit side-by-side with the elegant architecture of the old town (‘Vieux-Montreal’). Scratch beneath Montreal’s surface (literally) and you’ll discover an entire Underground City, twenty miles of walkways and passages linking the main points of interest.

    TRANSFERS

On Day 11, travel in business class aboard VIA Rail’s service from Quebec City to Montreal (journey time approx. 3 hrs 15 mins), from where you can walk or take a taxi to your hotel. We’ve included a private transfer from your hotel to Montreal Airport for your flight home.
