Your first base on your Tanzania adventure is The Highlands, nestled amid lush forest beside the Olmoti Volcano, just north of the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater. Domed tented suites offer the ultimate in luxury camping, complete with wood burning stoves, king beds and bay windows offering spectacular views. On your first full day in camp, it’s an early start (though well worth it) as you head to the Ngorongoro Crater, created from a volcanic eruption some three million years ago. While the landform itself is spectacular, it is also home to a wealth of wildlife – including lion, zebra and black rhino. After a lovely picnic lunch beneath the trees, it’s time to head back to camp. You can simply relax beside the swimming pool or around the fire pit, or you can head out on a guided visit to a local community, learning more about the unique Maasai culture.
The next day, another crater hike awaits, this time the Empakaai crater, home to a lake that is rich with birdlife – including its famed flamingos. After exploring the area and possibly sighting big game on your way back to the vehicle, enjoy lunch back at The Highlands, before a hike through mountain forest along an ancient Maasai cattle trail to the Olmoti Crater. This route is particularly good for spotting birdlife, butterflies and varying vegetation.
