Though it can be enjoyed all year round, the autumnal months between September and November, and late spring from around March to May are generally the best times to visit. Rainfall is relatively low, skies are clearer, and temperatures are mild. Of course, the famed cherry blossom also blooms in the springtime, making it an even more popular time to visit.

Hiroshima

+

Today, you will be met by your guide at your hotel in Kyoto, before catching the Shinkansen to Hiroshima. After a quick 1.5 hour journey, uncover the moving Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, home to a range of monuments, memorials, statues and a brilliant museum that are dedicated to the victims of this horrific arrack. From Hiroshima, a short ferry ride will take you to Miyajima Island. A small sacred island located in the Inland Sea, it has been a holy place of Shintoism since the earliest times. Here you will find perhaps the most photographed site in Japan - The Floating Torii Gate, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then, take the return Shinkansen back to lovely Kyoto and the luxurious Ritz-Carlton there.

5

Nara

+

Today you will visit the fascinating town of Nara. Just 45 minutes from Kyoto by public transport (private car upgrades are available), Nara was once Japan’s capital and it is filled with traditional gardens, striking temples and ornate shrines. Visit the renowned Toda-ji Temple, home to the largest Buddha statue in Japan, before marvelling at Kasuga Taish, Nara’s most celebrated shrine built back in 768 AD. End the day with a wander through enchanting Nara Park, often called Deer Park by locals due to the population of more than 1,000 tame deer living there, considered in the Shinto religion to be messengers of the gods. You will then return to The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto.

Kyoto to Nagano

Bid goodbye to the cultural hub of Kyoto as you head towards the soaring Japanese Alps. You will be driven from The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto to Kyoto Station, before a 40-minute Shinkansen ride to Nagoya. At the Nagoya station, you will be escorted to the platform for your ultra-scenic train journey to Nagano, which will take approximately three hours.

You have a long journey to reach your ryokan tonight, which includes a change at Nagoya station, one of the busiest in Japan, followed by a city tour. Large luggage will be an inconvenience, so we strongly encourage you to speak to your Luxury Travel Specialist and arrange for your luggage to be forwarded to your final hotel in Tokyo.

Your accommodation here is Biyu no Yado, an authentic Japanese-style ryokan. Here, enjoy delicious kaiseki dinners each evening, made solely using Japanese ingredients. Spend your time in Yudanaka as you please. A particular highlight here is the fantastic Jigokudani Monkey Park, a volcanic area home to Japan’s famous snow monkeys (or Japanese macaques) who bathe in the park's natural hot springs.
