The Maldives is the ultimate Indian Ocean retreat. Home to some of the world’s best beaches, this archipelago of islands in the sun is one of the most sought-after luxury holiday destinations. The beautifully remote island of Laamu is a true tropical playground, where powder white sand, turquoise water and some of the most spectacular marine life on the planet, has helped create one of the Maldives’ most celebrated resorts.
Read on to discover the top reasons you should head to Six Senses Laamu...
The Overwater Villas
Elegantly designed to provide an unparalleled level of privacy, comfort and luxury, Lagoon and Ocean Villas feature outdoor relaxing platforms with daybeds, outdoor showers, dining decks with all-glass tables, sunken ocean-view glass baths and panoramic viewing decks. For something really special, choose a Laamu Water Villa with Pool, located at the end of the jetties for the ultimate seclusion, where you can enjoy sunrise or sunset vistas and an uninterrupted view to the Indian Ocean from your private pool. Elegant Packing Tip: There is no need to pack shampoo or conditioner – you will find large, refillable bottles in your room, as well as a plethora of luxury lotions, a rattan beach bag and flip flops.
The Epicurean Delights
Laamu’s six bars and restaurants are mainly set over water, however the organic LEAF is an exception. The resort’s signature restaurant is set above the organic garden, reached via a rope bridge, and offers various menus including ‘Chef’s Recommendations’ with wine pairings, and the Garden Chili Table menu, served at the communal Chili Table. The overwater Longitude serving international and Asian cuisine, is where guests can savour incredible breakfasts, while Japanese restaurant Zen offers Japanese fusion cuisine with a modern twist and features a live kitchen station. Bar-wise, light bites, cocktails and magical sunsets can all be enjoyed at Chill Lounge & Bar, and Sip Sip boasts casual all-day dining and a sunken bar. One of our favourite features is the Ice Studio, where guests can discover over 40 different flavours of homemade ice cream and sorbet – all complimentary!
The Eco-Friendly Feel
Responsible energy and water consumption, reducing the carbon footprint and working on marine conservation projects are all part of the hotel’s green policy. Luxury villas are made of sustainably-sourced materials yet boast every creature comfort, while straws are made from biodegradable paper and over 40 different types of herbs, vegetables, salad leaves and micro-herbs are grown in the organic garden. A flock of 24 chickens have also recently been introduced to the island, producing organic free-range eggs. As the resort promotes responsible tourism, guests can ponder over a selection of enlightening activities – from visiting local villages on neighbouring islands, to observing pioneering conservation work, including turtle breeding and identification, coral health and recovery.
The Wellness Options
Try one of the award-winning signature treatments, including massages, body wraps and facials, all using fresh natural products, and visit the yoga pavilion overlooking the turquoise ocean to practice aerial and hatha yoga, Pranayama (breathing exercise) and meditation. Visiting Practitioners come to practice holistic therapies including acupressure, reflexology and Reiki, while a herbal stream, hammam, sauna and lap pool are all available to guests. For the ultimate indulgence, treat yourself to a 24k gold age-defying facial, followed by a vegetable health tonic.
The fabulous array of watersports will keep guests entertained throughout the day. A plethora of activities include wakeboarding, water skiing, windsurfing and catamaran sailing, as well as unforgettable diving and snorkelling experiences to discover pristine coral gardens and a variety of fish life. Guests are encouraged to start their marine adventure by snorkelling off Chill Lounge & Bar to discover the spectacular house reef, home to many parrot fish and green turtles, while The Yin Yang, Maldives’ most famous surfing point, breaks just opposite the resort.
Share a beautiful sunset with dolphins on a dhoni cruise, explore the deeper waters of the Laamu atoll on an early morning or sunset fishing trip, and experience the Maldivian way of life on an island-hopping tour. Desert island picnics offer a true Robinson Crusoe experience and you can also stake out your own sandbank for the day, for sunbathing, cocktails or a private barbecue dinner. Epicureans will love the cooking classes, wine-pairing courses and the bartenders challenge, while a fleet of bicycles are also available to guests – a fun way to explore the island and its winding jetties.
