Cyprus is the perfect setting for a luxury family holiday or romantic getaway for couples. Few locations are as entwined with mythology, history, nature and art, but Cyprus’ mighty legend predates many of its Mediterranean neighbours. Historical heavyweights, such as Alexander the Great and Cleopatra, fell for the island’s many charms while the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite, is said to have chosen Cyprus as her home because its beauty matched her own. Romance, then, comes easily to Cyprus with many secluded coves and bounteous beaches awaiting discovery, but Cypriot culture is just as welcoming to families. First time visitors or prospective travellers may be wondering whether the north or south of the island is best to meet their needs. Thankfully, our expert Travel Consultants are on hand to help.
Cyprus is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean and is home to two distinct cultures, the Turkish tradition in the north and Greek heritage in the south, with the incredible Troodos mountain range forming a natural spine between the two. Along the north coast, the Kyrenia mountains stretch to the sky, while the lower altitude of the south lends itself to days spent enjoying the plethora of pristine beaches in the area.
The towns of Limassol and Paphos are the main attraction for visitors however, there is much to see beyond these suntraps. Paphos was awarded the ‘European Capital of Culture’ title last year, which feels long overdue since Paphos has been a hub of culture for over two millennia. In ancient history, Paphos was the destination for many pilgrims seeking to worship at the home of Aphrodite and the city was the centre of the Aegean Empire, which placed Aphrodite at the heart of many of its founding myths, with records showing it remains one of the most celebrated and celestial cities on Earth.
Today, Paphos is home to three of our finest luxury resorts. Almyra, overlooking Paphos’ mediaeval castle, provides first-class family facilities, including the pionnering ‘Baby Go Lightly’ service, which ensures your little ones have all they need ready on arrival. Sister property, Annabelle, enjoys a more grown-up ambience, but younger guests can still enjoy the many fun facilities next door at Almyra. Annabelle is a beachfront beauty with waterfalls, winding pools and manicured gardens creating a sense of serene calm fitting for Aphrodite herself.
For couples preferring an adults-only stay, Constantinou Bros Asimina Suites Hotel delivers privacy and luxury in equal measure. Guests can enjoy a scenic coastal walk into Paphos Town, but the sprawling beachfront resort has the sense of being its own private township with an alluring sense of seclusion. The all-suite accommodation, quartet of inviting restaurants and Thalasso spa make sun-soaked summers a delight and Executive-level guests can enjoy private beach cabanas for the duration of their stay.
North of Paphos, the peaceful setting of Latchi is home to Anassa, meaning ‘Queen’ in classical Greek. Modelled on a traditional Byzantine village, Anassa is a truly exquisite resort with Roman mosaics and Venetian frescoes. Complete privacy and luxury abound, with one of Cyprus’ most beautiful beaches, Chrysochou Bay, on the doorstep. Even young guests can enjoy the fun of island life with Anassa’s signature sailing club, while private yacht charters are also available.
To the south of Paphos, Pissouri Bay is a two kilometre stretch of sand and pebbles. Columbia Beach Resort showcases the alternative side of Cyprus, including its lush countryside and majestic white cliffs. The resort’s spa has won high-profile awards, there is a cycling centre on site and four championship golf courses nearby, ensuring guests of all interests are catered for. Families will appreciate the wealth of children’s facilities on site and the variety of delectable dining options.
Finally, in Limassol the newly refurbished Parklane, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa has spared no expense in the pursuit of family fun. With interiors inspired by Limassol’s history of lace making, this unique resort offers something for everyone with its exclusive ‘Parklane Experience’. Guests are ideally placed to explore the quaint charm of Limassol, home to ancient castles and tree-lined avenues. Culture buffs will enjoy the historic Sculpture Park and the many archaeological sites located throughout the city.
