Our Guide To Alternative Destinations For Winter Sun

By Elegant Resorts Travel Experts

Posted: 17 October 2017

As the cooler climates and colourful influence of autumn arrives, you may be left dreaming of the white-sand beaches and complimentary cocktails of your, seemingly distant, summer holiday — but if you don’t want to wait another year for a much-needed getaway, there’s a host of desirable faraway destinations with sunshine-filled skies that may not have crossed your mind awaiting your arrival for a luxury winter sun holiday.

Asia

Boasting a cool and dry season between November and March, India is a land of cultural curiosity and remarkable diversity waiting to be discovered, with plenty of winter sun luxury. Expect glorious sunshine overhead, as you embrace one of the world’s most incredible countries — witness the astounding architecture of the Taj Mahal, head below ground to explore the awe-inspiring Ajanta Caves, or simply soak up the sun along the country’s gorgeous coastline. With temperatures averaging in the late twenties, the winter months are the ideal time to visit the state of Kerala, with its idyllic blend of beautiful beaches, towering palm trees and astounding mountains. Take time to admire the Arabian Sea from the infinity-edge pool with a stay at The Leela Kovalam, Kerala’s largest beachside resort.

At India’s southern tip, the exotic island of Sri Lanka has welcomed sun-seeking travellers for centuries. This diverse island has everything on offer from boundless beaches to timeless ruins, all amongst year-round blissful temperatures thanks to its equatorial position. Stay at the contemporary beachfront sanctuary, Amanwella or choose to immerse yourself in the unspoilt wilderness at Chena Huts by Uga Escapes.

Further east, Cambodia will not disappoint if you’re seeking the best winter sun, with temperatures usually peaking at 26°C during November. Culture truly thrives here, particularly within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Angkor Wat in the northern province of Siem Reap, which is home to the spectacular remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire. Those looking to seclude themselves and simply bask in Cambodia’s astounding weather may venture off-shore for a stay at Song Saa Private Island, a luxurious and sustainable island hideaway featuring gorgeous beaches, tropical reefs and lush rainforest all on your doorstep.

South Africa

A country immense in both size and diversity, South Africa has generally glorious year-round weather — the Cape is hot and dry during its summer months, from November and February, whilst the north remains warm with sunny spells interspersed by tropical rainstorms making an ideal winter sun luxury destination. High on the list of things not to be missed in South Africa, the Garden Route thrives upon the country’s glorious weather, ever enhancing its lush foliage and adding an extra sparkle to the waters of the lagoons. Stretching from the harbour town of Mossel Bay to the eastern Cape, this 300km stretch of coastline is home to several quintessentially African towns, including Plettenberg Bay, with its beautiful beaches, and the world-class golf courses of Knysna. For an idyllic blend of busy urban life and picturesque scenery, Cape Town is the perfect city for your stay, combining endless bustling streets filled with culture and cuisine and the magnificent Table Mountain National Park, which truly defines the city. The Silo Hotel yields boundless views of this charismatic city, and is also located above the new Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art. Prepare to book your luxury holiday to Cape Town well in advance if you wish to visit during the festive season, as the best hotels have limited availability at this popular time. A short distance from Cape Town, immerse yourself in the outstanding beauty of the Cape Winelands. The mountainous regions of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek feature centuries-old vineyards with plenty of local wineries offering estate tours and wine-making demonstrations, as well as wine-tasting opportunities galore! Further north, the rapidly changing city of Johannesburg is a destination for shopping, sightseeing and sipping cocktails to your heart’s content, whilst in contrast, an hour’s drive outside the city you’ll discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Cradle of Humankind.

North America

Full of global icons and recognisable cities which require no introduction, the United States of America is a land of stunningly diverse and beautiful landscapes. During the winter months, selected areas maintain their sunshine-filled skies and attract a host of visitors, drawn there to explore these magnificent regions.

Scottsdale, boasting a 31-mile-long location in central Arizona, and surrounded by scenic mountains and dry desert terrains, is often called the ‘Valley of the Sun’ due to its minimum of 330 days of sunshine each year. Temperatures throughout the autumn and winter reach highs of 25°C, combined with very little rainfall, making it the ideal destination for outdoor adventures. Enjoy a hike in the magnificent McDowell Sonoran Preserve to admire the autumn foliage or tee-off at a choice of luxurious golf courses, each boasting dramatic desert views.

Sun-kissed southern California is perfect for visitors seeking fabulous food, charismatic cities and landscapes with endless natural beauty on their winter sun holiday, as well as also boasting a reputation of having a Mediterranean-like climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. An unusual, yet intriguing sight in southern California, aided by its warm climate, is the ‘Migration of the Monarch Butterfly’. Escaping the colder states for California’s sunny climes, you can spot these orange-toned creatures fluttering along the coast, usually resting in eucalyptus and pine trees, between mid-October and February. When choosing where to stay, Orange County is home to a blissful 42 miles of surf and sand and yields the perfect sense of enjoying the welcome sunshine — overlook the Pacific Ocean from the cliffside location at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel or immerse yourself in the sweeping California hills at the simply stylish Resort at Pelican Hill. Ensure to make the most of the sweeping golden-sand coastlines – especially nearby Huntington Beach, synonymous for its surfing culture - which tend to be quieter during the later months of the year. Further south, San Diego is ideal for those looking to enjoy a destination for all the family, with museums, a zoo and a bustling downtown scene to enjoy, whilst accommodation may come courtesy of The Beach Village at The Del, set amongst the sparkling sands of Coronado Beach.

Those looking for something a little more tropical can embrace the island paradise of Hawaii, the perfect winter escape with plenty of warm weather to enjoy. The winter months here also bring incredible experiences such as whale watching — gaze at the awe-inspiring sight of up to six-thousand Humpback Whales as they migrate to protected waters to give birth to their young.

South America

Whilst parts of the north may be feeling the winter chill, South America provides the warmer climes many will be hoping for from any luxury winter sun holiday destination. Beach-bound visitors should head to the tropical climate of Brazil, in particular to Rio de Janeiro, whose summer months are between December and March. Temperatures between October and April also climb in the awe-inspiring country of Argentina — here, guests can choose to immerse themselves in the cosmopolitan lifestyle of Buenos Aires or explore the spectacular landscapes of the Pampas and Andes mountains.
