Known as the man who turned American fashion inside out, this May, the De Young Museum in San Francisco is proud to showcase a celebration of the life and career of the definitive designer, Oscar de la Renta, with an in-depth, full-scale retrospective of his glittering portfolio of work. To make the most of this fabulous event, Elegant Resorts has tailored an exclusive package for our clients, combining a three-night stay in San Francisco, complete with exclusive access to the exhibition, with a four-night retreat in the ever-stunning Napa Valley, where beautiful scenery and exquisite cuisine will complete the five-star treatment.
Housed in the Golden Gate Park’s landmark museum, ‘Oscar de la Renta: The Retrospective’ is set to be a true treasure for fashion lovers, as over one-hundred-and-thirty ensembles, spanning de la Renta’s fifty year career, are due to be displayed in all their glory, bringing to life the extraordinary accomplishments of one of America’s most beloved designers. Curated by the larger-than-life former editor of Vogue Magazine, André Leon Talley, the pieces have been meticulously gathered from public and private collections, as well as from the archives of the House of Balmain, making for an extensive display of gowns, worn by ladies including the former First Lady Laura Bush, Sarah Jessica Parker, Penélope Cruz and Taylor Swift.
Visitors will embark on a journey through time, tracing de la Renta’s steps from his early days spent as an artist in Madrid, where he took his first steps into the fashion world as an apprentice to Cristóbel Balenciaga, to his time spent in 1960s Paris as a couture assistant at Lanvin, through to his leap to New York City, where his career blossomed. First taking over the Jane Derby fashion house, he went on to be the first Dominican to design for a French couture house at Balmain, and, partly down to his unstoppably enterprising spirit, turned his name into a global powerhouse, renowned for his enduringly elegant, uptown designs. Dressing women from all walks of life, he has become a favourite of First Ladies – including Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Hilary Rodham Clinton and Michelle Obama – and red carpet heroines alike, with each creation bearing his signature flourish of ruffles and embellishments, transforming old-school glamour for a modern age.
If the fashionista within you is feeling green with envy at the thought of missing out, Elegant Resorts is delighted to present a fabulously tailored package, including a three-night stay at The Fairmont San Francisco, offering an exclusive pre-opening tour of the ‘Oscar de la Renta: The Retrospective’ exhibition, a private tour of the De Young permanent collection with a museum curator, a de la Renta-inspired shopping tour with a top stylist, a pre-fixe dinner for two people at Michelin-starred restaurant, Quince, and an official exhibition catalogue with a limited edition Oscar de la Renta gift.
