As we celebrate the launch of #OurDubai, we’re looking beyond the unrivalled luxury of Dubai’s world-class hotels to explore the unmissable excursions and experiences that allow you to immerse yourself in the spirit of this Middle Eastern metropolis. Our Luxury Travel Specialists – Savannah Clifton and Nicola Killen – share their favourite adventures from their recent travels...
Sundowner Dune Dinner Safari
Soaking up the beauty of Dubai’s dusty dunes, the Sundowner Dune Dinner Safari is a must-do experience - particularly for families - and one of our personal favourites. As the sun began to set in the orange-hued sky, we jumped into our 4x4 vehicle and set off. Our guide took us on a thrilling 2-hour drive, travelling high and low across the shifting sands, with plenty of stops along the way to capture a photograph or two, with the magical sunset as a backdrop. We then arrived at the beautiful Bedouin-style camp where we’d be dining for the evening. There’s a flickering bonfire and traditional lanterns lighting the camp, with activities such as camel rides, mini sand-boarding and henna hand painting to try. We sat down to dine as a mouth-watering Arabic-style buffet was served, before we enjoyed a spectacular belly-dancing show. The most peaceful and surreal part of the evening was the moment the camp lights dimmed for us to simply enjoy the magic of the desert stars in the night sky – a memory for us to treasure!
Desert Dune Buggies
There’s no better way to discover Dubai’s desert thrills than by dune buggy. After being collected from our hotel, we headed straight for the golden sands, where we received extensive guidance and safety advice from the friendly team to ensure we made the most of our exhilarating experience. The four-seater, off-road dune buggies made for a challenging, yet exciting drive, as we followed in the pre-made tracks of our expert guide through the dusty landscape. We felt totally immersed as we powered our way across Dubai’s limitless dunes, stopping occasionally to enjoy refreshments, savour the view and capture photographs. If you’re an adrenaline junkie looking to explore Dubai’s wild side, we’d highly recommend this action-packed adventure!
Afternoon Tea at the Burj
On the 27th floor of the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, the spellbinding SkyView Bar is home to one of Dubai’s most elegant experiences – so naturally, it was unmissable for us! This iconic Dubai landmark serves only the finest delicacies as part of its Afternoon Tea; delicate sandwiches, fresh pastries and cakes arrived at our table on Burj-shaped cake stands, along with a collection of teas and coffees. As we savoured the eight-serving experience, accompanied by world-class service from the attentive staff, we remained awe-struck at the incredible view from the restaurant’s 360-degree windows, overlooking Dubai’s cityscape. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, or simply wish to delight in one of Dubai’s most exclusive settings, this simple yet sublime experience should be high on your to-do list.
La Perle Show
Absolutely mesmerising may be the only way to describe La Perle! Created by world-renowned artistic director, Franco Dragone, and presented in a 1,300-seat, purpose-built aqua theatre, we knew we were in for a treat. The show captured our imagination from the moment we arrived – world-class performers from around the world perform extraordinary acts including acrobatics, contortion, flying and diving to create a one-of-a-kind live show. The set also took us by surprise throughout, with waterfalls seemingly appearing from nowhere and performers defying gravity. Expect to be astonished more than once during the aqua-based show, but rest assured, this extraordinary performance will be loved by every generation when visiting Dubai.
AquaTrek at Atlantis, The Palm
We soon discovered our adventurous sides at AquaTrek by Atlantis, The Palm. After putting on our specially-designed helmets, allowing us to spend 30 minutes underwater, we submerged ourselves into the incredible Ambassador Lagoon, which is teeming with more than 65,000 marine animals. As we slowly strolled through the turquoise water, we saw plenty of colourful schools of fish nearby, whilst sharks and stingrays came closer than we expected! The friendly, expert team were always close by, guiding us through the lagoon with ease and capturing incredible pictures beneath the water. This unusual experience is one that intrepid adventure seekers will love, and we’d highly recommend!
Switching from adrenaline-fuelled adventures to a light-hearted fun, Ski Dubai was a family-friendly winter wonderland. After adapting to the chilly climate inside, which was in stark comparison to Dubai’s scorching heat, we soon discovered there was much more to do than simply ski. In addition to five ski runs – including the world’s first indoor black run – we tried a myriad of snow-based activities, including a thrilling tubing ride and exhilarating snow zorbing! To avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting on a weekday (the attraction is equally popular with locals!) but do ensure Ski Dubai is on your holiday itinerary, especially for those with fun-loving little ones.
