Back in the 1940s, the Ol Pejeta area of Kenya’s stunning Laikipia County was a series of ranches, mostly managed by British settlers. After decades of the wildlife being cruelly poached, the wonderful Sweetwater Game Reserve was created in 1988, to protect the endangered animals in the area. Over the years, the area expanded to cover 90,000 acres now known as the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a sanctuary that promotes innovative and sustainable conservation of hundreds of incredible species. Whether you stay in a traditional tented camp or luxurious villa, get ready to explore the many conservation projects in the area. Spot the last remaining northern and southern white rhinos, as well as the critically endangered black rhino, take an unforgettable visit to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, home to orphaned apes, or track lions with researchers.

Highlights+
Wildlife Encounters

As well as visiting the rhino and chimpanzee projects, you can join expert trackers on morning, afternoon and evening game drives to go in search of elephant, leopard, cheetah, lion, black-backed jackal, spotted hyena and African wild dogs. Ol Pejeta is a bird-watcher's paradise with some 500 species recorded - including the migrant species from Europe and North Africa that visit the area from November to April.

Tracking Lions

Lions are becoming more vulnerable here, and you can learn more about the importance of protecting them by joining the Ol Pejeta researchers. Using specialist equipment, the collared lions are tracked, monitored and the data sent to the Ecological Department. Learn how to identify each individual by their whisker patterns, as well as uncovering how old they are by the colour of their nose. The data gathered is vital to protect them for future generations.

Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Established by the Jane Goodall Institute and the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary provides a safe haven for orphaned and abandoned chimpanzees. Their natural large enclosure gives them a chance to socialise and interact as they are nursed back to health after their traumatic past. You can meet some of the 39 occupants, watch them feed and learn about this ultra-important conservation project.

Climate+

In Laikipia, the altitude varies dramatically and temperatures fall by about 6.5°C for every 1,000m you climb. As a result, climatic variations exist within the region. Due to its proximity to the equator, temperatures do not vary much around the year. Daytime temperatures hover around the mid to high twenties, while nights and early mornings can be notably cooler. Two wet seasons occur per year - the 'Short Rains' fall between October and November, while the 'Long Rains' occur between March and May. April is the wettest month. June to September are considered the dry months, characterised by mostly sunny days and cold night time temperatures.
