One of the most underrated parks in Kenya, Meru National Park offers everything you need for an unforgettable African safari - from a wealth of wildlife and the African 'Big Five', to diverse landscapes that include green hills, golden savannah and flowing rivers. The ruggedly beautiful park is probably most famous as the home of the late Joy and George Adamson who, in the 1960s, released their lion Elsa back into the wild, the story documented in ‘Born Free’. The beautiful luxury lodge Elsa's Kopje is sculpted into Mughwango Hill, above George Adamson's original camp.

Wildlife Encounters

Meru National Park features many spring-fed rivers which attract an abundance of wildlife, including herds of elephant and wallowing hippos, and are also great for river fishing. The African Big Five - buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino - can be found in the park’s diverse landscapes, as well as giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, waterbuck, cheetah, hartebeest, reedbuck caracal and aardwolf. Within Meru, there is also a large protected sanctuary for spectacular black and white rhinos.

Guided Walks

Take a guided walk to the top of Mughwango Hill, from which you can absorb sweeping views across to Mount Kenya. Along the way, learn to identify tracks and the smaller flora and fauna that all make up this essential ecosystem.

Bird Watching

Meru is home to over 300 recorded bird species, making it a paradise for bird watchers. Spectacular species include the Somali ostrich, Boran cisticola, vulturine guineafowl, Hinde's babble, and the yellow-necked spurfowl. The rivers also attract a range of water birds - including the African finfoor, heron, and African fish eagle.

Getting There+

Meru National Park houses an airstrip, making it easily accessible from a number of glorious Kenyan destinations by shared or private charter flight. The flight from Nairobi takes approximately one hour.

As part of your luxury tailor-made tour of Kenya, your Luxury Travel Specialist will ensure that the best transport options for you are arranged.
