One of our favourite luxury hotel brands here at Elegant Resorts, Mandarin Oriental have recently unveiled a brand new property in wonderful Dubai. Myself and two more of our team were lucky enough to be invited for a lovely long weekend here (very do-able to Dubai) to see the fabulous new property for ourselves and experience all the delights that Mandarin Oriental guarantee. I could write pages and pages about my wonderful experience here, so instead I’ve rounded up my five highlights of Dubai’s most exciting new opening…
1. Creative cuisine
Easily one of the most memorable parts of the already unforgettable stay was the amazing food. Everything we were served (and that was quite a lot over the weekend!) was seriously delicious. We were lucky enough to try out all three of the main restaurants, beginning with an amazing lunch at The Bay as we got to know our fun, friendly hosts.
That evening, it was time for dinner at Netsu, a Japanese steakhouse with an impressive bar upstairs and a beautifully-lit outdoor terrace. Just stepping into the contemporary venue was an experience, complete with unique Japanese-style art spray painted on the walls, a theatrical open-kitchen with a traditional straw cooking pit and several sushi stations. We enjoyed the most tender Wagyu steak cooked using the authentic Warayaki method, the freshest sashimi and equally delicious accompaniments – including hot stone-cooked rice and house-made soy sauce. If we weren't full up enough, all this was followed by a dreamy desert platter of mochi ice cream balls, kinako French toast, ginger and date pudding and Japanese raspberry cheesecake: AMAZING! While eating this delicious spread, we were honoured to meet Chef Ross Shonhan, the creator of Netsu and the former Head Chef at Nobu in London! He was so down to earth and explained the restaurant’s concept with such passion, something that was clear in every mouthful that we ate.
The other dining highlight was a lovely, leisurely lunch at the sixth-floor, rooftop Portuguese restaurant Tasca by José Avillez, a Michelin-star awarded chef. Our friendly waiter explained that the concept is based on an authentic Portuguese tasca, serving small plates and sharing dishes with the freshest ingredients. Among the delicious dishes that we tried, the unanimous favourite was the scarlet shrimp, sourced all the way from Portugal, as well as a mandarin sorbet that looked (almost) too good to eat! Matching the amazing food were the creative cocktails, stylish venue (complete with an adults-only infinity pool) and uninterrupted views over the ocean. It was also here that we met with the General Manager, Werner Anzinger, learning more about the fabulous hotel while enjoying truly gorgeous sunset views.
2. Spectacular service
Perfectly matching the delicious cuisine and gorgeous interiors was the staff that served us throughout our stay. From those that showed us to our room to the servers beside the pool and the brilliant bar staff, I experienced some of the best service I’ve ever had in a luxury hotel here. As well as the friendly faces and warm smiles that greeted us everywhere, it was the attention-to-detail and little things that really stood out - like noticing when we’d dropped a napkin and replacing it, and ensuring our bags were never on the floor but placed on a chair.
3. Style and flair
As expected from Mandarin Oriental, the hotel was sophisticated, sleek and super stylish. The lobby really has the ‘wow-factor’ and has become one of the most photographed on social media in Dubai (I must admit, we took a few pictures of our own!). It features stunning glass trees and pools of water, each perfectly reflecting the natural light that comes in from the floor-to-ceiling windows. The lovely lobby was a sign of things to come as we were each shown to our Deluxe Sea View Rooms that had - you guessed it - gorgeous sea views. They were so spacious and beautifully decorated, with a contemporary style and a quirky finish with splashes of colour, as well as a seriously impressive marble bathroom.
4. The famous Spa at Mandarin Oriental
After an overnight flight, there was nowhere I was delighted to see more than the beautiful Spa at Mandarin Oriental, a beautiful and tranquil space where we were greeted with yet more smiles and a delicious wellness tea. Here, we were lucky enough to enjoy an incredible, literally head-to-toe, Arabian massage using local oils - genuinely one of the best treatments I've ever had. After another herbal tea in the unique relaxation pods (there is also an outdoor spa balcony that overlooks the Arabian Gulf) and a peek at the fully-equipped gym, we left feeling so refreshed and rejuvenated... and ready for more food!
5. A prime location
If the amazing facilities, food and people inside the hotel weren’t enough, what’s outside is just as impressive. Located along the soft sands of Jumeirah Beach, it is the closest beachfront resort to downtown Dubai – less than fifteen minutes by taxi - meaning that you are within easy access of both the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall. We couldn't resist a trip to the famous Dubai fountains, the perfect way to round off an evening of fun and great company! Of course, we had to try out the beachfront facilities, enjoying fabulous fresh fruit platters as we caught a few rays of the Arabian sunshine – bliss. Another huge highlight is the hotel’s proximity to La Mer, an upscale beachfront area of restaurants (some casual and some fine dining), cafes, boutique shops and a family-friendly waterpark, reached by an easy, ten-minute walk along the waterfront.
