Few countries are blessed with such awe-inspiring natural wonders as Zambia!
Whilst the remarkable Victoria Falls and Zambezi River may form the initial pull for visitors, the raw wilderness, diverse wildlife, welcoming culture and spectacular sunsets all combine to create an unforgettable luxury safari experience. Long before David Livingstone came across the area in 1840, early humans had inhabited The Great Rift Valley and Lower Zambezi River, leading to the area being known as one of the cradles of the human race. Whilst boasting a rich cultural history, it’s the sensational game viewing, adrenaline-fuelled adventure and endless photographic opportunities that form a timeless attraction. Easily accessed from South Africa, with savvy travellers pushing the boat out to twin this dynamic destination with Botswana, Zambia forms a significant part of the perfect African adventure.
When our Product Manager for Africa, Jessica Abrams, visited Zambia recently, she was in awe of the Falls — AND the wondrous wildlife. With large game, fantastic birdlife and a fascinating history, Zambia has a wealth of water-based safari experiences, land-based adventure and remarkable natural features to appeal to every age of traveller. A Remarkable Welcome At The Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara
Where else in the world, are you greeted by grazing zebra in the grounds of your luxury hotel?! We arrived at the Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara, just as the sun was setting, and were met by zebra and giraffe casually grazing on the lawn! I simply had to pinch myself! The views over the falls, combined with so many zebra (just wandering around eating grass), was a very surreal experience! I’d only ever seen zebra whilst on safari before, yet here, this all seemed very normal and relaxed. I simply took a seat, caught my breath and watched the dipping sunset for thirty minutes — the colours were amazing with deep reds and vibrant purples. As if my first impression couldn’t be any better, our evening culminated with a private dinner on the hotel’s lawn, complete with the sound of the hypnotic falls in the background.
The magic continued the next morning, as I woke up and opened my curtains to see a zebra right outside my patio - the novelty did not wear off! I took so many pictures on my camera of the zebra, that they certainly left an impression. Having enjoyed a delicious alfresco breakfast, with an exceptional view of the great Victoria Falls and Zambezi River, we headed out to explore the area. No stay in Zambia would be complete without a trip to the mighty Victoria Falls and to hear all about the history behind David Livingstone. The area is actually in the middle of a 10-year flood cycle at the moment, so the Falls and river were higher than they have been for a long time. Due to this, we had to wear double layers of waterproofs, provided by Anantara and we frequently stopped for incredible photo opportunities amongst the spray. Venturing across the rope bridge, which was flooded with water, was a real highlight — it felt like having buckets of water thrown over you! The spray was so intense, that you couldn’t' see anything around you. However, once over the other side we were greeted by a huge rainbow and sensational vista of the mighty Falls.
Classic Zambia Experiences
Every visit to Zambia should include a safari and whether by land or via boat, you are guaranteed to see a rich and diverse abundance of game and water-based wildlife. From elephants, lions and giraffe, to noisy hippopotamus and flocks of chirping birds, the river life and lush landscape is constantly engaging. Our visit to the Elephant Café was another must-do experience, as not only was the food divine, but their commitment to the local wildlife and community was really inspiring. Using only local organic ingredients, sourced within a certain radius. they had won the Best Restaurant in Zambia award during 2017 — and I can honestly say that this was the best meal I experienced during my Zambia trip.
The Royal Livingstone Express
An elevated view from an elegant old steam train — boarding the Royal Livingstone Express was a lovely excuse to dress up whilst in the wild! We were greeted with Champagne and received an informative commentary as we glided to the famous Victoria Falls bridge – from here, you have an amazing view of both the Zimbabwe and Zambia side of the great Falls. Surprisingly, we were given the opportunity to disembark the train to take photos and absorb the thrilling surroundings. Some of us were even lucky enough to be allowed to sit in the driver’s seat of the train! During our journey back, we savoured a four-course dinner on board the train — a delicious finale!
