Etihad Airways has been working closely with a panel of sleep experts from the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology (ACPN) in Abu Dhabi to research ways to enhance sleep in-flight and has found that sleep comfort is an experience that starts with the senses. Here are some of the special touches the airline has introduced to help passengers enjoy a new level of relaxation, making sleep easier and more refreshing.
When it comes to sleep, everything from the softness of the mattress to the texture of the sheets will determine how fast you arrive at your ‘dream’ destination. With this in mind Etihad’s Diamond First and Pearl Business Class guests can now experience supreme with mattresses and bed linen handcrafted from natural fibres by renowned sleep product brand, COCO-MAT, as well as a fully-flat bed with massage function and a personal turn down service. Meanwhile, Coral Economy Class passengers enjoy a cradle seat with lumbar support and adjustable headrest, enabling the ideal sitting or reclining position to be easily found, while there are fleecy blankets to snuggle up with.
As you may expect, noise can often wake you from your peaceful slumber which is why Etihad provides noise-cancelling headsets in all its cabin classes, meaning you can have some welcome peace and quiet to help you to drift off to sleep, or enjoy the in-flight entertainment without any distractions − there is even a radio channel dedicated to meditation.
A relaxing scent can help aid sleep and Diamond First Class passengers receive amenity kits full of goodies to help them unwind including hand balm, lip balm, facial moisturiser and a refreshing towelette, while Etihad’s special pillow mist − infused with lavendar and camomile − is sprayed on all pillows in Diamond First Class. Pearl Business Class kits feature a range of exclusive natural toiletries by Athens based Korres, including mint tea hand lotion and lip balm. All classes, including Coral Economy Class, receive useful amenities including a dental kit, socks, eyeshades and earplugs to add to overnight comfort.
A favourite for many of us is the hot bedtime drink. Etihad serves a range of teas, coffees − including cappuccino, and hot chocolate in Coral Economy Class, while Pearl Business and Diamond First guests can choose a range of hot chocolate, malt drinks and teas including − camomile, and request a bedtime drink or a wake up option. In addition, to cater to the inevitable disruption to your sleep and digestive cycle, Etihad Diamond First Class passengers can order food anytime from either an a la carte or Kitchen Anytime menu with dishes cooked to order by the on-board chef, while in Pearl Business Class there is a dine-on-demand menu. Coral Economy Class passengers can choose from three main dishes with vegetarian meals offered as standard. On overnight flights, enjoy the ‘Goodnight Service’ where a quick, light snack is offered before you settle down for the night.
