Spending your first four nights in Rome, be immersed in authentic surroundings at the historic Villa Spalletti Travelli, which is set in a former aristocratic home and boasts genuine antiques among its classical interiors. The best time to visit Rome and Ravello is generally during spring and late summer. In Rome, it can get very hot and busy during July and August, so if you want to make the most of thinner crowds and more comfortable temperatures, the months of May, June and September are very pleasant. Similarly, the Amalfi Coast is in bloom from April to June, when you will see the most beautiful floral displays, with perfect temperatures and fewer visitors than the busy summer months of July and August, though if you do chose to travel during this period you will be blessed with plenty of events and festivals.

Villa Spalletti Trivelli

Start you journey by living la Dolce Vita in Rome, Italy's 'Eternal City', where you will find a dazzling array of world-famous architecture and landmarks, centuries-old culture and history, chic designer boutiques and a plethora of fabulous restaurants, trendy bars, eye-opening gelaterias and stylish pavement cafes that invite you to sit awhile and people-watch, cappuccino, ice-cream or bellini in hand. It's a wonderful city to explore, with incredible architecture, literally, around every corner and a myriad jumble of narrow cobblestone backstreets to amble along at a leisurely pace. First-time visitors will inevitably head to Rome's most iconic sites, such as the Forum, Colliseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican, but they can perhaps afford to be choosy, as it's almost a given that the seductive qualities of the city will inspire return visits. Achingly cool and cosmopolitan, the city is an intoxicating mix of glamour wrapped in a package of Romanesque elegance; vibrant, stylish and the epitome of Italian brio.

Staying at

Palazzo Avino

After being immersed in the ancient splendour of Rome, arrive in Ravello for a change of pace.

Sitting a seven-kilometre drive up the steep hill of Valle del Dragone, Ravello sits high in the hills above Amalfi, boasting stunning views across the bay below. Both peaceful and charming, this sophisticated resort has had an esteemed list of guests, including Greta Garbo, Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis and Tennessee Williams, who no doubt fell for its elegance and tranquillity. Known for the beautiful gardens and centuries-old villas that characterise the area, stroll through the refined estates to see the Roman bust replicas and poetic inscriptions. For the most astounding view, head to Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone to admire the Gulf of Sorrento’s stretch of sparkling waters reaching out to the horizon.

You could also stop by the Cathedral, which dates back to 1806, and take a look at the curious bronze doors that depict 54 scenes from the life of Christ, before heading inside to find the sculpted white-marble interiors, museum and holy relics. Around the main square, you can dine at traditional Trattoria’s and savour the authentic pasta and potter the colourful streets, plus you can always head down to the town of Amalfi if you fancy something a little livelier, where you can explore the historic centre, see the striking cathedral and take it easy at the chic sidewalk cafes. From here, you can also hop on a boat to admire the coastline or see the Emerald Grotto, which emits an eerie deep-green hue from its underwater crevice.
