Southern California summers tend to be very dry. There may be short-lived spells of cold weather in wintertime. Los Angeles suffers a city smog - a mixture of pollution and fog - which is at its worst from July to September. The smog lingers because the light winds are not strong enough to blow it past the surrounding hills.

Santa Monica is the perfect base from which to explore Los Angeles. Keep your eyes peeled for your favourite celebrities in Beverly Hills - you never know, they may be out and about dining and shopping on Rodeo Drive. Without doubt, Hollywood, has to be the most famous district in Los Angeles and here, you'll be able to immerse yourself in attractions such as a tours of Universal Studios and Warner Bros Studios. Or take a walk along the Hollywood Walk of Fame where you can look out for the names of movie stars on the star-shaped plaques embedded in the pavement or head over to the TLC Chinese Theatre where you can put your hands and feet inside the stone set hand and foot prints of more film icons. Don’t forget to snap a family photo with the Hollywood sign in the background. Back in Santa Monica, enjoy relaxing and playing on the meticulously groomed golden sandy beaches and take a bike ride along the Southern Bay Bicycle Trail. Take to the water for some surfing or body boarding, or stroll along the historic Santa Monica Pier − home to a vintage carousel and the iconic Ferris wheel. Santa Monica is a great place to people-watch too, particularly the rollerbladers and those working out on the fitness equipment at Muscle Beach.

With so much on offer, it's often difficult to know where to start! The California coast is perfect for a family adventure - the outdoor lifestyle is so attractive, the healthy cuisine is delicious and the range of entertainment is simply superb.
