The best time to visit Porto is from April to September, when the weather is warm, dry and sunny. Although not Mediterranean, temperatures are hot from June to August, so if you plan on doing a lot of walking, the cooler months may be more appealing. In the Douro Valley, mid to late September is the harvest season, so a good time to see vineyards in action.

The Yeatman

Porto, located on the Iberian Peninsula of the Atlantic Ocean, is the second-largest city in Portugal after Lisbon and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

On your first day in Porto, check into the Yeatman Hotel, an award-winning Relais & Châteaux hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant set in the heart of this beautiful city. Set amid the region’s port lodges, take a visit to the Taylor Port House next door. Now in its fourth century, the cellars have been renovated to offer an immersive journey through its production history, and guests will be presented with a tasting in the relaxing surroundings.

On your second and third day, take a guided tour to explore the city, or venture out on your own either on foot or by taking the boat across the river. Porto's history stretches back thousands of years – which is reflected in the eclectic architecture that can be seen throughout its hillside location – though the city really came to prominence around 300 years ago when the world-famous fortified wine that bears the city's name was first created, packed and transported from the Vila Nova de Gaia neighbourhood by British merchants who thought that adding a dash of brandy to red wine would be an interesting idea! These days, port and wine still plays a pivotal role in the city's culture and its heritage can be discovered in a number of museums and well-preserved 'Port Houses' that are dotted across the compact city. In addition, Porto has a strong arts and culture scene – especially since 2012 when it was designated joint Capital of Culture – with galleries and museums that are devoted to contemporary art, botanical gardens, palaces and a splendid Baroque cathedral providing just some of its many cultural gems.

Known as 'The Food Capital of Portugal', Porto has an array of restaurants and cafes serving excellent cuisine, including regional specialities such as smokey meats and tangy cheeses, while trendy bars and clubs have exploded in numbers in recent years and offer younger visitors a wide choice of nighttime entertainment in its lively cosmopolitan hub. We recommend Camafeu restaurant for dinner, and you must explore the streets of Galeria de Paris, the centre of Porto’s nightlife, for an evening drink.

The Yeatman

Occupying an elevated position that allows for spectacular panoramic views of Porto, The Yeatman is an award-winning, family-owned, luxury hotel in the heart of the city and long-established as a haven for wine-lovers and gourmands, who will adore experiencing the gourmet cuisine at its two Michelin Star restaurant. Wine plays a central role in The Yeatman's personality; the hotel boasts a comprehensive collection of Portuguese wine and offers guests a range of wine-based activities, such as tastings, courses and excursions to vineyards in Douro Valley – even the products used in many of the spa treatments include wine in their ingredients or are wine-themed! In addition, the hotel's historic location in Vila Nova di Gaia is conveniently close to Porto's famous Port Houses, where the city's famous fortified wine has been aged for more than three centuries. The Yeatman's luxurious accommodation, meanwhile, is contemporary and individually designed, each guest room and suite boasting a private furnished terrace offering superb views of the city and Douro River. Perfectly romantic for couples who wish to enjoy a luxurious stay in a city whose star is on the rise, thanks to its excellent arts, culture, nightlife and restaurants, The Yeatman is also a fantastic option for families, with youngsters able to take advantage of the facilities and activities offered at the children's club and an array of attractions in and around the city, including the sandy beach nearby.
