Journey Highlights

Our unforgettable Botswana itinerary takes discerning travellers who love nature, wildlife and fabulous scenery to two unspoilt wilderness areas of the country that are perfect not only for relaxation, but for observing a wide range of animals and birds in their natural, water-based environment. At each of the luxurious camps, guests will reside in spacious tented accommodation, with features including en suite bathrooms, plunge pools and outdoor salas and showers, while activities include star-gazing from large, furnished decks, catch-and-release fishing (in season), game-drives, guided nature walks and bird-watching (Botswana is particularly renowned for its prolific variety of birds, so if you enjoy ornithology and bird-spotting, this is a fantastic country to visit). For those that prefer to spot slightly larger creatures, expect to see elephants (Abu Camp and Kings Pool Camp even have their own herds) and species of zebra, hyaena, lion and leopard in the drier winter months.

During the dry season, from May to October, the Okavango Delta becomes a sanctuary for animals as they venture towards the water in the flooded areas, which, in turn, provides superb game-viewing opportunities. Species that may be seen during this time include the elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo, rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, impala, African Wild Dog and wildebeest. By contrast, from November to April, the wet season brings with it the opportunity to encounter lush vegetation and dramatic skies - perfect for birdwatchers and photographers. Expect to encounter bird species such as the Lilac-breasted Roller, Greater Flamingo, Red-crested Cuckoo, Southern Carmine, African Spoonbill and Crimson-breasted Shrike.

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Staying at

Vumbura Plains

Dominated by the Kalahari Desert, the world's largest expanse of unbroken sand, Botswana is also the home of the incredible Okavango Delta  - one of the world's largest inland water systems. Each year, it turns into a thriving ecological paradise, courtesy of tectonic plate shifts that swell the Kwando River and flood the plains, attracting animals and birds which, consequently, provide a spectacle that is not replicated anywhere else in the world.

Vumbura Plains, situated in the Vumbura Reserve in the extreme north of the Okavango Delta, has two separate luxury seven-roomed tented camps, each with their own dining, lounge and bar area. Guest rooms are spacious and raised off the ground on wooden decks to provide panoramic views of the surrounding floodplains, while open Land Rovers guarantee thrilling game-viewing.

Transfer from Vumbura Plains to Jao Camp

Jao Camp

At Jao Camp, you’ll have the time to experience thrilling day and night game-drives in open Land Rovers, star-gaze on the cushioned deck which protrudes over the floodplain, enjoy walking safaris, mokoro trips and boat excursions on the waterways, and delight at the prolific variety of birdlife at the camp. In-between these activities, you can chill out by the pool or relax on your outdoor sala, replete with the latest blockbuster and a glass of fine wine in hand.

Transfer from Jao Camp to Abu Camp

Abu Camp

Today, you’ll be heading to Abu Camp, lured by exciting thoughts of being in close proximity to the herd of elephants that has made the camp their home. Abu Camp is the original elephant-back safari retreat in the Okavango Delta and its stunning location, amongst magnificent hardwood trees and on the edge of a lagoon, provides excellent surroundings for the elephants and a resident school of hippos. While here, you’ll be able to enjoy nature walks to view the area’s flora and fauna, and enjoy day and night game-drives. Alternatively, you might enjoy flicking through the collection of African field guides that can be found in the well-stocked library, or watching the animals go by from the confines of the refreshing swimming pool.

Transfer from Abu Camp to Kings Pool Camp

Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, Botswana

Staying at

Kings Pool Camp

The Linyanti region is located further north than the Okavango Delta and is a wonderfully isolated area boasting stunning scenery and prolific numbers of animals and birds, including herds of elephants that reach enormous densities in the dry winter months. Additionally, you'll find species of zebra, antelope, buffalo, wildebeest, hyena, lion, leopard and cheetah, along with wild dogs, no doubt attracted by the marshes, waterways, riverine forests and grassland.

Your final two nights in Botswana will be spent enjoying the hospitality at Kings Pool Camp. Participate in day and night game-drives, enjoy spectacular sunsets on a cruise aboard the camp’s double-decker barge, Queen Sylvia, and watch the elephants from the safety of the camp’s raised decks.

Staying at

Kings Pool Camp

This luxurious camp, overlooking Kings Pool Lagoon and the Linyanti River, is renowned for its enormous herds of elephants during the winter months, while the Linyanti Concession it is situated in offers outstanding scenery, diverse habitats and a prolific amount of wildlife - raised walkways allow the animals to wander freely around the camp. Kings Pool Camp has the ambience and decor that evokes a bygone era and boasts lounge, dining room and bar areas that are set on expansive raised decks (there is also an open-air 'kgolta' for dining under the stars), while the guest accommodation is equally Colonial in style and comprises nine well-appointed Luxury Tents constructed of canvas and thatch, each one boasting a plunge pool and sala surrounded by a spacious private deck.

Guests of the camp have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities that allow for exploration of the surrounding landscape, including seasonal catch-and-release fishing, day and night game-drives and walks, as well as seasonal barge cruises along the Linyanti River on board the Colonial-style Queen Sylvia, offering spectacular viewing - water levels permitting.
