While sand, sea and sun are guaranteed in the Canary Islands, the archipelago also boasts towering volcanoes, Sahara-like dunes, prehistoric sites, lunar lands, verdant pine forests and magical coves dotted around the coastlines.

Tenerife, the biggest island of the bunch, is blessed with exceptional scenery, including the volcanic landscapes around Mount Teide, giving much to offer in the way of exploration and adventure. The island is also home to a line-up of luxury resorts, promising the best dining, spa and sporting experiences. Fuerteventura, meanwhile, offers glorious sunshine and endless swathes of golden-sand beaches scattered with grand hotels. It tends to be breezy here, too, making it a haven for windsurfers and kite-surfers. Away from the coast, discover a dazzling, UNESCO-protected backdrop of volcanic terrain, looking out for unusual nesting seabirds and miniature reptiles rummaging in the undergrowth.

A short hop by ferry or private yacht brings you to Lanzarote, where the sun shines for a staggering 300 days a year. Lanzarote is fast developing a reputation for luxury and exclusivity, with plenty of activities for all the family. It’s also famed for its lunar-like landscape, another UNESCO-listed biosphere with an extraordinary ecology. Finally, Gran Canaria is a year-round suntrap, known for its warm hospitality and wealth of family attractions. The atmosphere here is delightfully Spanish; expect fiestas and tapas bars in whitewashed colonial towns. This, combined with more UNESCO sites and the iconic sand dunes of Maspalomas, offers an unforgettable destination for your next luxury holiday.

Volcanic Landscapes

Wherever you visit in the Canary Islands, there is no doubt that you’ll be mesmerised by the spectacular and truly diverse topographies. Explore the astonishing flatlands and whopping, snow-draped Mount Teide in Tenerife’s National Park, or discover the diversity of Gran Canaria, a mini-size continent, with lush, pine-forested peaks, rugged mountains and sun-scorched, desert-like settings. On Lanzarote, prepare to feel like you’ve graced another planet, as you unearth extraordinary, black lava fields. Fuerteventura’s landscape, meanwhile, boasts rich hues of burnished bronze, copper and gold gleaming across its boundless plains, interspersed with cacti and free-range goats. Wherever you go, expect to gape at the sheer drama of these natural wonders, many listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

With predictable sunshine and a variety of backdrops, the Canary Islands offer some fabulous sporting opportunities. Golfers flock from all over the world, attracted to the top-class courses, flawlessly carved into the landscapes and boasting amazing ocean views. Expert instructors, caddies and buggies usually come as standard. Another popular activity here is hiking, particularly through the networks of ancient trails zigzagging across the islands. Whether you fancy a leisurely amble or challenging mountain trek, you’ll be sure to find the perfect route. Alternatively, head out into the shimmering waters of the Atlantic, where watersports - including sailing, surfing, windsurfing, scuba and more - allure all ages and abilities.

Art & Culture

Lovers of art and culture will not be disappointed when they set out to discover the Canary Islands. Highlights on Gran Canaria and Lanzarote include towering, abstract sculptures by native islanders, Cesar Manrique and Martin Chirino. Be sure to catch a glimpse at the amazing canvases by famous surrealist artist, Oscar Dominguez, on display in his home town of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Meanwhile visitors with an interest in architecture will no doubt admire the traditional island buildings, featuring decorative wooden balconies and colourful façades.

Family Fun

Every day is an adventure in the Canaries, and the superb settings of beaches, volcanoes, mountains and seas make an awesome natural playground for children. Take your pick from an array of unforgettable activities - from camel rides in the dunes or stargazing beside a volcano, to watching movies by moonlight, or looking out for whales. There are plenty of beaches to choose from, big and small, where little visitors can create fairy-tale castles and eat scrumptious ice-cream. For a break from the glorious sea, discover the huge assortment of family-fun attractions and epic theme parks, including zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens and water parks. Best of all, the constant temperatures and sun-filled days mean this exciting natural playground is perfect all year round!

Although belonging to Spain , the Canary Islands are actually closer to the African coastline and this means they enjoy mild temperatures year-round. It is a particularly popular winter sun destination, as the island boasts the lowest temperature difference between summer and winter in the world.
