At the time of making your Bisate Lodge booking, you may purchase a Gorilla permit ($1,500 per adult) that entitles you to join one trek with an expert guide. The Park Headquarters is located within easy driving distance of Bisate Lodge and it is from here that you will join a trek to track and observe one of twelve habituated groups of Mountain Gorillas (taking between one and five hours, with a restricted period of one hour to view the Mountain Gorillas in situ). The permits are strictly limited and are additional to accommodation rates. The rainforest terrain is steep and muddy at high altitude, so you should be prepared for a strenuous hike, adhere to a code of conduct and be over 15 years.
In addition to the main attraction of mountain gorilla trekking, guests can also purchase a permit to see the beautiful Golden Monkeys which are endemic to the area. These impressive primates live in groups of around thirty and live in the bamboo forest - their preferred source of food. The permits are available at a cost of $100 per person, per trek. With nature walks, bird watching, mountain treks, coffee and tea tasting, plus local community projects - guests can create a thrilling adventure in Rwanda.
Culture & History
Community engagement is at the core of Bisate Lodge's vision and guests can enjoy a rich cultural experience by visiting local villages and becoming involved with lodge initiatives. By strolling to the co-operative garden, or visiting the tree nursery, guests can meet local people and learn more about the culture of Rwanda.
Other activities include Golden Monkey treks, nature walks, tea and coffee tasting and community village visits. Hikes to Karisoke, site of the 1967 research camp and grave of Dian Fossey, plus full day guided hikes to Mount Bisoke, with its sweeping views of the rainforest and stunning crater lake are also possible.
