Romance

Balmy breezes and swaying palms signal the end of the day and start of an evening, and those in the mood for romance may wish to book a dinner for two in the coconut grove. Sip sundowners and devour fish straight from the sea, sizzling off the grill or mixed with curry leaves and spices. Complete your dining experience with a walk along candlelit paths to the nearby conservation centre - with luck, you may glimpse Giant Turtles laying their eggs by moonlight.

The Beach

On Sri Lanka's sundrenched southern shores is a luxury hideaway called Amanwella. A resort that boasts a private swathe of golden sand, trimmed by lofty coconut palms. Flip flop down to the beach and look forward to long, languid days soaking up the rays or snorkelling in the sea, especially good in winter when the waters are particularly calm. Come summer, other beaches in the vicinity are more suited to surfing enthusiasts, with big and bold rollers washing the coastline. Excellent tuition is available should you wish to give it a try.

Hotel Experiences

Sri Lanka has a proud heritage of arts and crafts, with some gorgeous designs in clay pottery. Guests looking for a special memento, or with an interest in experiencing local culture first-hand, can visit the village of Palapotta, a community known for its superb pottery skills. Watch master potters deftly spin, shape and stretch the terracotta into wonderful works of art, then do your best to copy him, creating a unique piece of your own. From decorative pots and vases, to figures and utensils, this is a highly enjoyable outing for everyone.

Wildlife Encounters

Just an hour west of Amanwella is Mirissa Bay, a fantastic spot to join boat trips for Blue Whale and dolphin-watching. There's even a chance to spot these spectacular ocean creatures from the beach, so it's always a good idea to keep a set of binoculars handy. You can also witness wildlife in the jungle around the resort, following winding paths while keeping check for birds, deer, monkeys, Monitor Lizards and more. Further afield, you can visit national parks in the hope of finding elephants, crocodiles and even leopards.

Spa & Wellness

Enjoy Amanwella's impressive spa menu, comprising massages, facials and various body treatments, in the privacy of your own suite or in a desirable garden location, such as the tropical coconut groves. Complement your spa experience with a glass of fresh coconut juice or, for those who are easily tempted, a flute of crisp Champagne.
