Luxury Holidays At Amanjiwo

Imagine the scene: a natural amphitheatre with beautiful limestone hills rising behind, a sweeping plain in front, four sacred volcanoes gracing the horizon and, at its heart, Amanjiwo. Add the sight of Borobudur, the largest Buddhist sanctuary in the world, framed by the resort's entrance, and you cannot fail to be soothed by the all-pervading calm here. Mirroring its unique neighbour, the resort's guest suites radiate outward in two deep crescents, rimmed by flower-bedecked walls, while highlights include thatched pavilions with daybeds, four-poster beds, outdoor sunken baths and private pools.

Culture & History

As the morning mist clears and the sun rises above the surrounding volcanoes, it reveals the spiritual and almost inconceivably beautiful Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhism monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Borobudur's six platforms are beautifully decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 life-size Buddha statues, which have survived Gunung Merapi's eruptions and the 2006 earthquake, keeping it as mysterious and striking as it would have been 1,200 years ago. Visit Hindu temples dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries on Dieng Plateau and the ancient site of Prambanan, which provides incredible views of Hindu temples dotted across the plain.

Spa & Wellness

A range of Javanese and traditional beauty treatments are available at Amanjiwo, some of which incorporate the ancient holistic Jamu method of healing. These can be enjoyed in the privacy of guest suites or in the specially designed spa suite, which has twin massage tables and an outdoor kubuk for relaxing afterwards with spicy ginger tea. The two-hour Mandi Lulur is a highlight and follows the traditional Javanese preparation of a princess on the eve of her wedding. Facials, massages and cream baths, as well as a masculine version of Mandi Lulur, are also available.

In Addition

To enhance your stay at Amanjiwo, consult the Guest Relations department and partake in one of the resort's 'Cultural Trail' packages. Excursions include an early-morning tour to the world-famous Buddhist temple in Borobudur (with privileged access before the general public), trips to the Hindu temple and rice fields in Selognyo, guided bike-rides and local market tours, including surreal bird markets and traditional Indonesian food markets.
