The Maldives is one of the most magical holiday destinations in our portfolio. Blessed with natural beauty beyond compare, this is a beach destination like no other, with endless lagoons stretching as far as the eye can see and sumptuous sands blanketing the shore.
It is also home to some of the world’s most fabulous five-star resorts, offering a sublime blend of exceptional service, indulgent accommodation and carefree barefoot luxury. While here, I had the pleasure of visiting One&Only Reethi Rah, Six Senses Laamu and COMO Maalifushi, and experienced for myself what makes these three Indian Ocean gems really shine.
Boasting exquisite restaurants, sumptuous spas and spectacular views, each resort has plenty to offer. From the revered glamour of One&Only Reethi Rah, to the back-to-nature elegance of Six Senses Laamu and our latest addition, COMO Maalifushi, you can be assured there is a perfect resort for you.
One&Only Reethi Rah – A Firm Favourite
Having arrived on the biggest yacht in the Maldives, it was easy to see why One&Only Reethi Rah is often cited as the crowning glory of the Indian Ocean. While here, I stayed in a Beach Villa, and while I usually have a preference for Water Villas, these recently refurbished guestrooms did more than impress me – unlike some other resorts, you are blessed with an amazing full view of the beach to savour from morning until evening!
The resort is ideal for families and the KidsOnly children’s club, available for children aged four to twelve years, is one of the best in the Maldives. I arrived on a Monday, which turned out to be ‘Pirate Day’! With one of the biggest watersports centres I have seen in the Maldives, there was plenty for teenagers to splash into, including an inflatable iceberg in the sea, which doubles up as a slippery slide! There is also a climbing wall and a full-sized Astro Turf football pitch, meaning your brood need never be bored.
The food is another highlight at One&Only Reethi Rah. I ate at Reethi Restaurant, the main dining venue at the resort, which boasts fantastically opulent, yet airy interiors. However, our clients and Travel Consultants often name Tapasake as their favourite restaurant in the Maldives, where contemporary Japanese cuisine is served alongside innovative cocktails with dreamy sunset views. For lunch, nothing beats heading to the Beach Club to enjoy the chilled out vibe of the afternoon, while Rah Bar is a must for a hip evening spot, with live entertainment and a fine drinks selection.
Six Senses Laamu – Best for Spa and Beach
Set on a beautiful lush island, when arriving at Six Senses Laamu you will find everything you have ever dreamt about the Maldives – a picture-perfect scene of white powder sands being lapped by the turquoise-coloured waters awaits you! Rustic, yet polished in all its aspects, this is the ultimate luxurious back-to-nature experience. With a slightly longer transfer than the other resorts – approximately a thirty-five-minute scenic flight from Malé – the payoff is some of the best marine life you can find in the Maldives. You can even snorkel straight from the fabulous overwater Chill Bar or, if you feel like taking it easy, relax with a drink and watch on as others dive into the depths below you!
Six Senses Spa Laamu is extremely impressive, too. I had my treatment in a ‘nest’, which is a woven pod set deep within the lush vegetation overlooking the ocean. The Six Senses brand is world-renowned for its excellent spa and wellness concept, and this resort is no different, offering a wide range of treatments allowing you to feel blissfully at one with nature.
My favourite restaurant here was Zen, which served exquisite sushi on an exclusive overwater deck, though all dining options are fantastic and bring to your plate freshly caught and locally sourced ingredients – Leaf is particularly impressive, where you follow a rope bridge to your table in the trees, while Chill Bar is fantastic for lazing on a daybed, overlooking the reef as the sun sets.
COMO Maalifushi, The Maldives – Our Latest Addition
Having only been added to our portfolio this year, I was excited to see for myself the COMO Maalifushi experience. The welcome I received was so friendly, and I was greeted with refreshing coconut water to kick off my tropical arrival! A particularly lovely touch was a personal welcome to the island from the General Manager, Pietro, who ensures every client receives the same warm treatment from the moment they set foot in the resort.
The signature restaurant, Tai, was where I had the best meal of my trip. Floating above the water’s surface, the seven-course tasting menu was simply divine, with sensational Japanese-style seafood and one of the most succulent lobster dishes I have ever tasted. We finished the meal off by sipping on COMO Maalifushi’s signature sake cocktail on one of the comfy sofas as the sun set over the lilac horizon – the ultimate Maldives experience!
During my stay, I stayed in the lead-in water accommodation, the Water Suite. One of the biggest and most spacious overwater accommodation options in the Maldives, boasting a huge sundeck and a private pool, I would highly recommend them for a luxurious stay. For families, the Water Villas feature a separate living area connected by a door, making them perfect for those travelling with children. In the morning, my day was kick-started by another tasty treat in the form of a mouthwatering plate of Eggs Benedict, before I headed to the spa. The overwater treatment rooms are impressively spacious, and luckily I had time to squeeze in an indulgent Signature Massage, perfect for unwinding before my flight back to the UK!
