After a short three-and-a-half-hour flight, followed by a comfortable 45-minute transfer, I arrived at Danai Beach Resort & Villas in beautiful Halkidiki! It’s easy to see why this Greek beauty is a member of the prestigious ‘Leading Hotels of The World’ – from the grand entrance path decorated with colourful flowers and foliage, to the pristine stretch of private golden-sand beach, there is an essence of total luxury throughout the resort, complemented by a team of friendly and attentive staff who are always on hand to help however they can.
Upon my arrival, I was delighted to find I’d be staying in a beautiful Mediterranean Suite – comprised of an expansive living and dining area, a lavish raised bedroom, huge marble bathroom and private balcony, it was like a sunshine-filled home-away-from-home! Every room is individually decorated with personal touches, bringing an extra sense of character to the hotel. The Mediterranean Suite includes a working marble fireplace and stunning antique furnishings, as well as an inviting hydro-massage Jacuzzi bath, which is the perfect place to relax before you head out for the evening!
Food at the resort’s three dining venues will tantalise all the senses, whilst the endless wine list will leave you feeling spoilt for choice! The award-winning Squirrel restaurant is one of Greece’s top culinary addresses, whilst Andromeda and Sea Horse Grill offer equally delightful cuisine in a more relaxed atmosphere. I also had chance to savour a private wine-tasting experience in the old-world ambience of the resort’s wine cellar, which holds 1,700 of the finest wines, carefully collected over decades. You can also experience a private dinner in the cellar, which I’m sure would be equally magical! For an easy-going evening, head to the Seaside Bar. The evening I spent here was amazing – the bartender created incredible handcrafted cocktails to suit everyone’s palate, and waiters served up tasty platters, including an incredible dessert platter, which was far too tempting to resist!
Danai Beach Resort & Villas features a 314-metre stretch of private beach, lined with sun beds, beach tents and private beach cabanas. I’d highly recommend indulging in a private cabana for the day – there’s no better way to soak up the spectacular views in a comfortable setting. You can savour additional elements, such as a barbecue by the cabana or a private spa treatment. We loved having fresh ice cream made by the chef at the cabana - a truly unique beach experience.
Outside of the resort, the closest village is Nikiti, which can be accessed by a 30-minute walk along the coastal path or a five-minute taxi journey from the hotel. Here, you’ll find some quaint shops and restaurants, as well as a local village atmosphere to immerse yourself in for a true taste of Greece. If you’re looking for something a little livelier, Neos Marmaras is 25 minutes away, and boasts a cosmopolitan atmosphere, with Blue Flag-awarded beaches, rustic tavernas and bustling beach bars. I enjoyed lunch along the shore in one of the local restaurants, watching quaint fishing boats pass by as we sampled delicious local cuisine. Evenings are energetic in Neos Marmaras, with some fabulous cocktail bars lining the waterfront!
