Vail is one of Colorado’s most important winter playgrounds as it sets the benchmark for others in North America; immaculately groomed slopes, state-of-the-art lifts and an easy introduction to off-piste in its celebrated and ever-expanding Back Bowls area and an excellent snow record with a season that lasts from November to April. The area is steeped in gold mining history and its Tyrolean-style pedestrianised centre offers an eclectic selection of chalet-style hotels, smart boutiques and restaurants and by American standards a busy nightlife.
