There are two reasons why visitors to Shanghai should experience The Bund’s Tourist Tunnel; it’s convenience to cross from The Bund to Pudong and for its reputation as the most bizarre city attraction in Shanghai; possibly the world. Theme-park-style cars will escort you from one side of the river to the other (underground), while a psychedelic light show of coloured illuminations, projected images and dreamy narration provide in-transit entertainment. A first-of-its-kind in China, western visitors are always left feeling perplexed and slightly bemused, but because there are no boats or bridges across Huangpu River, the Tourist Tunnel is pretty much unavoidable. In fact, so abstract is the experience, you’ll probably find yourself making excuses to go back for more.
