Attracting between two and four-million visitors each year, the world-famous Taj Mahal really needs no introduction. It was built between 1631 and 1653 by Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his beloved third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who tragically died in childbirth. An expression of his undying love for her, the marble monument was built by twenty-thousand construction workers and was inlaid with around twenty-eight different types of precious and semi-precious stones (however, many were ripped off during the Indian rebellion of 1857). Being just five minutes away from this glorious building, The Oberoi Amarvilas provides battery-operated resort buggies to and from the iconic site. This staggering monument - one of the Seven Wonders of the World - is open for night viewings when there is a full moon (and two days either side), which inspire a beautiful and extra-special experience, and is closed on Fridays. The best time to visit is between October and March, when the temperatures are a little more bearable.
