The Ghan

Embark on an epic adventure through Australia’s red heart on-board the incredible Australian Ghan. Covering a sizeable 2,979 kilometres over two days, the train travels from Adelaide to Darwin, and vice-versa, at a leisurely fifty-three miles per hour. During this time, the train chugs its way across an open mass of scorched red soil and mesmerising arid desert, traversing the same route which Afghan cameleers travelled over eighty years ago. Carriages are split into three categories, Red, Gold and Platinum, offering guests comfortable cabins with shared amenities, or luxury suites complete with en suite facilities. Included in the journey are numerous excursions to explore the surrounding areas. From sunset camel treks to desert tracking in four-wheel vehicles and visits to the rock formations of Uluru, The Ghan is as much about the off-board activities as it is about the luxurious on-board experience.

Leisure Facilities

Luxury Rail Travel

The Ghan will appeal to all those who enjoy the magic of age-old train travel; the thundering of the track, the shuddering of locomotives, the gentle sways of the carriage and the decades of history. Cabins and on-board facilities are very luxurious, but journeys are as all great rail voyages should be; long and enchanting, so you’ll need to be a lover of vast stretches of never-ending scenery and hours of quiet contemplation to thoroughly enjoy the journey.

Luxury Hotel Experiences

There are numerous excursions available throughout this two-day voyage, including stops in Alice Springs – the gateway to Ayers Rock/Ulusabu, The Olgas and King’s Canyon. In fact, The Ghan runs twice weekly so a good option is to stop in Alice Springs and spend a few days finding your land legs again. We recommend you combine The Ghan with a stay at Longitude 131° , which overlooks the magnificent Ayers Rock. In Darwin, you can visit Kakadu National Park and meet captivating aboriginals, while in Katherine, gentle riverboats provide a relaxing afternoon activity. The best time to organise a journey aboard The Ghan is between May and November, when the relentless Australian sun is at its coolest.
