Escape to the City
A city break is perfect for slotting in at any time of year and can be a fantastic way to kick off your yearly travels.
Miami is the place to be to combine an urban thrill with some sun and sand, with Latin flair, a glossy arts scene and glamorous nightlife, along with one of the best beaches in the United States. In January, the Art Deco Weekend is one of the hottest events, now in its fortieth year. The Jazz Age Lawn Party is the newest addition to the celebration, with the world’s largest prohibition-inspired gathering sitting alongside a classic car show, fashion shows and plenty of music and dancing!
New York never fails to impress, and after the bustle of Christmas has petered out, the shops become much easier to navigate – plus, you have the benefit of post-festive sales! If you are seeking culture, Venice also quietens down during January, leaving spectacular sights, such as St Mark’s Basilica, yours for exploring. Despite cooler temperatures, Venice in January can be very rewarding, with empty streets and winter mists only adding to its alluring mystique.
If you are prepared to travel further afield, Cape Town has the benefit of being in the same time zone as the UK, meaning you can drop by with no threat of jet lag! In the middle of South Africa’s summer season, the month of January is crammed with festivals and events, and is great for appreciating the fine wine and cuisine of the ‘Mother City’ – you can also always combine it with an adventure along the Garden Route.
Take Time to Relax
After a frenetic Christmas, you might be feeling like it is time to take it easy. To discover your inner peace, why not take refuge in Arizona? Renowned in wellness circles for its strong natural energy, Sedona once lay under the sea, resulting in the coloured rings left on the spires of red rock that are said to radiate with power.
It subsequently attracts waves of hippies, New Agers and spiritual types, but with a rich Native American heritage, Arizona has a fascinating culture and some of the world’s most relaxing spa escapes. With dry heat and no mosquitoes, the weather is also perfect for golf at the majestic Seven Canyons Golf Course, while the 27th Annual Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale, starting 14th January 2017, is the perfect way for art lovers to spend the day.
For a classic beach hideaway, the Caribbean and the Maldives never fail to disappoint, and while temperatures can be slightly cooler in the Caribbean, it is also the beginning of both area’s dry seasons. Thailand, meanwhile, is at its peak on the Andaman Coast and in Phuket. Here, there is a trove of luxurious five-star spa resorts to ease you into the new year, along with sumptuously soft sands and soul-stirring scenery to help you unwind.
A Stylish Ski Break
While the sun may be shining in other parts of the world, there are also plenty of chances to embrace the snowy side and enjoy a ski break. In North America, Whistler in Canada offers extensive skiable areas, allowing for one of the longest ski seasons possible. In its peak in January, the charming traffic-free village is laden with boutiques, restaurants and bars, with ski-up slopeside bars with live music, lively grills and plenty of fun activities for children, including the Whistler Kids Snow School.
In the United States, Colorado is best known for its Aspen ski resort, with almost seventy-years of skiing history and runs that have hosted World Cup races for decades. A former silver-mining town, Aspen is where you will find some of America’s most sought-after après-ski spots. Closer to home, Switzerland offers stylish and glamorous resorts with Verbier and St Mortiz, while France boasts Val Thorens, the highest resort in the French Alps.
Take an Adventure!
Australia starts January with a bang in Sydney, where one of the world’s biggest New Years Eve parties kicks off the year, and the excitement doesn’t end there! January is the height of summer for both Australia and New Zealand, making it the perfect time for venturing down under, where you can enjoy cinematic scenery and embark on exciting outdoor adventures. You can also tick some impressive items off your travel bucket list, with a trip up to Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef, where you can witness for yourself the spectacular beauty of the world’s largest coral reef system.
Elsewhere in the southern hemisphere, summer is also in swing in Argentina and Brazil, beckoning visitors for a Latin American adventure. Explore the beautiful city of Buenos Aires or experience the incomparable charisma of Rio de Janeiro before admiring the wonder of one of the world’s most impressive waterfalls at Iguazú National Park.
Meanwhile in Dubai, temperatures are dropping to a cooler heat, making for a perfect time to embark on a journey into the desert. Adrenaline lovers will be in their element as they are whipped across the dunes on a thrilling desert safari, board a quad-bike to tear up the sands or even try sand-boarding!
