Mountain access is via the Silver Queen gondola; lift passes covers Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk, which can be reached by the efficient local transport system. Originally established as a town by silver miners in 1879, this is a ski resort with plenty of character, where an authentic old world charm prevails. Unlike many of its purpose-built counterparts, Aspen retains a charismatic appeal as a real town, nestled among some of the most awe-inspiring natural scenery and benefiting from some beautiful Victorian architecture. The Aspen ski school offers lots of specialist courses while, for children, there are excellent ski and non-ski kindergartens. 'Shopaholics' will be in seventh heaven, with designers like Gucci, Prada, Ralph Lauren and Chanel all having shops in town. 'Culture vultures' will also be spoilt for choice, with over fifty art galleries to meander around. There's also a wide selection of restaurants and bars serving everything from gourmet cuisine to pizza. Other activities that may be enjoyed during your stay include snow-mobiling, snowcat and snow-shoe tours, dog-sledding, tubing, sleigh rides and mine tours.
