The Sancutary MS Yangzi Explorer travels between Chongqing and Yichang, about 10% of the Yangzi River – China’s most historical and mystical river and Asia’s longest. Named the golden watercourse it travels from the glaciers on the edge of the Tibetan plateau, from west to east through the Qinghai, Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces as well as the city of Shanghai, before emptying into the East China Sea. Its most impressive section is the Three Gorges, a stunning 200km stretch that inspired poets of the Tang Dynasty. Each of the Three Gorges of the Yangzi River has its own specific features; at 8 kilometres the Qutang Gorge is the shortest and the narrowest, but has the highest peaks and features rocky banks looming on each side, Wu Gorge is 28 miles long and as the widest gorge offers views incorporating deep canyons and eerie fog, while the Xiling Gorge is the longest at 40 miles and is home to the Three Gorges Dam which is the largest hydroelectric project in the world.
