Once a sleepy desert village in the north of Chile, San Pedro de Atacama is now a major gateway to the Atacama Desert and has consequently experienced quite a boom in tourism over the years. Still just a small village, San Pedro is bordered by volcanoes, numerous rock formations, salt flats, geysers, canyons and craters, many of which bear the marks of ancient tribes. The village itself accommodates plentiful restaurants, bars and coffee shops, a small church and an archaeological museum housing ceramics and pottery from the region’s first inhabitants. Renowned for its eternal blue sky, San Pedro is typical of any desert location, with year-round hot temperatures, humidity and an arid climate, while evenings often drop below zero degrees. Bear in mind San Pedro de Atacama sits at a height of 2440 metres so some adjustments to the altitude are to be expected.
