Posted: 15 February 2017
The treasures of Thailand have long been a magnet for luxury travellers seeking adventure, beach escapes and evocative culture, pulling in people of all ages and backgrounds with promises of ancient discoveries and out-of-this-world experiences.
The desire to want to simply pack up and dive into this most magnetic destination is understandable – a feast for all the senses, it’s hard not to let your wanderlust carry you away! However, the sensible advice is that planning in advance will definitely pay off, ensuring as little time as possible is wasted and you encounter no stressful hitches in your plans while you are trying to embrace the world, Thai style!
While some may thrive off action-crammed travel plans, most of us like to take it easy every now and then – either way, we can help you make your travel plans suit you. Read our guide to planning your perfect Thai escape in 2017 and make your Asian adventure a reality this year.
1. What do you want to do?
There is so much you could possibly see or do in Thailand, it may be a good starting point to decide on what you would most like to get from your time, or even make a list of some bucket list sights or experiences that you are yearning to tick off – the city lights of Bangkok or gleaming temples of Chiang Mai? Sizzling street markets or tranquil rainforest?
Thailand’s pulling power is partially down to the myriad of experiences on offer. While the main components of an all-encompassing Thai escape are generally considered to be the beautiful beaches, alluring culture, exotic wildlife and indulgent spa and wellness opportunities, we would care to bet that nobody has come home from Thailand without having encountered their share of surprises!
However, knowing what you hope to see more of will help your escape to be tailored to your own interests, and will help guide you through the maze of delights that makes up this incredibly diverse country, whether you would like a taste of everything, or hope to be little more selective with your time.
2. Where would you like to go?
Once you have decided what you hope to see and wish to do, you can start narrowing down on some of the key spots you would like to see – and believe us, there is plenty to inspire you!
The geography of Thailand is simple, once you grasp it! In the north, you will find Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the place to be if you are seeking a wildlife encounter. Located in the mountainous north of the country, here you will find beautifully ‘at-one-with-nature’ resorts, nestled in lush greenery – our favourite is Four Seasons Chiang Mai. Chiang Rai is known for its elephant sanctuaries and position in the Golden Triangle – the point where Burma, Thailand and Laos converge – making it an essential spot for animal-lovers and culture-lovers, alike. Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle and Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort both offer fantastic opportunities for seeing rescued gentle giants in their natural habitat!
A great way to combine your adventures in the north is with a beach break along the southern peninsula. Our favourite beach destinations are Koh Samui and Phuket, though which one you choose will probably dependon the time of year you go – the former enjoys its best weather during our summer months, while Phuket is vice versa. Four Seasons Koh Samui and Six Senses Samui both offer a sumptuous place to retreat to along the sands, and offer indulgent spa facilities.
3. Choose your experience
Whatever your interests are, your Thai escape can be given the edge to suit your travel personality.
If you are feeling adventurous, our Journeys are ideal for helping you see the best of Thailand. Our Exploring Thailand with Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts journey takes you from Chiang Mai, to Chiang Rai and Koh Samui, allowing you to experience the contrasting landscapes of the mesmerising north and the fabulous beaches of the southern peninsula in indulgent luxury.
If you really want to soak up the splendid scenery, our Luxury Rail Journey from Bangkok to Singapore traverses the stunning landscape of Malaysia, through lush rice paddies, to the urban metropolis of Bangkok, while on board the timelessly glamorous Eastern & Oriental Express. If you are looking for an easier, twin centre option, our Thailand for Families journey pairs the vibrant capital of Bangkok with a relaxing stay at Banyan Tree Phuket, where little ones can play in the sand while parents are pampered by soothing Ayurvedic treatments at the spa.
If you would like a more fashionable retreat in which to kick back on the powdery sands, we feature a range of exquisitely designed luxury villas in Thailand, perfect for a trendy beachside hideaway for friends to catch-up in the sun. Iniala Beach House is one of our favourite recent discoveries, set on the golden shore of Natai Beach in Phuket, offering impressively sleek and contemporary private villas with the benefit of an acclaimed restaurant nearby, plus exclusive spa rooms in each estate for private treatments.
For a hotel experience where the style stakes are really ramped up, we also love W Retreat Koh Samui. With ultra-chic, cutting-edge design, the unique W Lounge promises to impress with lotus-shaped seating sunken into the pool, and boasting breathtaking sea views – a spectacular spot from which to enjoy sundowners to round off the day.
