Queenstown first found fame in the 1860s as a very fruitful gold mining camp, these days the town’s better known for its adventurous sports and ‘Middle Earth’ landscapes. The list of activities is endless, from paragliding to hang-gliding, skydiving, white-water rafting and of course the infamous bungy jump. One shouldn’t presume it’s a town solely for the young and reckless -the oldest man to bungy jump off Kawarau Bridge was a magnificent ninety-four years old. In fact, Queenstown can be as energetic or as relaxing as you want it to be - the surrounding Otago region is flooded with vineyards, many of which grow the region’s speciality; Pinot Noir. Enjoy numerous wine tours including wine and cheese picnics amidst the glorious grape vines. The centre of Queenstown is a hub of restaurants, cafes, bars and taverns, all running to a smooth but energetic pace – retire here when it’s time to refuel.
