The Cape and Garden Route enjoy a climate similar to the south of France with warm summers running from October to April; winter (May to September) is usually cooler with more rain - if you're in Franschhoek during July you'll be able to join in the Bastille Day (14 July) celebrations which includes a wine and gourmet fair. To make the most of your game viewing opportunities, visit between May and August when the grass is short and the game is easily spotted.

Staying at

La Residence

+

Approximately one hour from Cape Town lies the food and wine capital of the country, Franschhoek. Home to more award-winning restaurants than anywhere else in South Africa, the pretty town owes its food and wine legacy to its French Huguenots ancestors, who settled here in 1688. The stunning boutique property, La Residence, is aimed at grown-ups and older children who can appreciate the pleasures of gourmet dining and fine wines. Whilst here, in addition to the many vineyard tours available – which includes wine tasting on horseback - you can enjoy cheese tasting and a half-hour chocolate tour at the Hugeunot Fine Chocolates, where you’ll enjoy some taste participation and witness a demonstration of the chocolate being made. Burn off any unwanted calories – or indeed, build up your appetite for more gourmet fare – by playing tennis or golf, mountain walking and horse-riding, though not necessarily through vineyards.

Staying at

La Residence

+

A sister property to the delightful Royal Malewane and sophisticated Birkenhead House, La Residence nestles right in the heart of a private thirty-acre working farm - complete with vineyards, plum orchards, a dam and fragrant manicured gardens - in the enchantingly beautiful and tranquil Franschhoek Valley in the Cape Winelands. Guests can look forward to highly personalised service, sublime cuisine and spectacular guest suites, each boasting a truly unique character and incorporating antiques and sumptuous soft furnishings. Choose from options including the white marble Frangipani Suite, the exotic Tibetan Suite or the romantic French boudoir-style Chambre Suite, with elevated king-size four-poster bed. In addition, there are five glamorous villas, some with private pools, set slightly away from the main property in the vineyard, which are individually decorated and perfect for families with children of any age. Please note: children over the age of 12 years old only are permitted at the main property.
