Journey Highlights

We believe that the best way to discover all that California has to offer is by car. There's so much to see and do in the state and travelling by car allows you to go at your own pace, stopping when you want to stop at the places you really want to learn more about.

This ten-night itinerary allows you to experience the state’s romantic and diverse scenery – everything from city views to coastal panoramas – and indulge in some of the country’s finest cuisine and local wines. Expertly crafted to incorporate the city of San Francisco, one of America’s most history-laden and photogenic cities, with the undulating hills, famous golf courses and vineyards of Carmel Valley and including Santa Barbara, the self-proclaimed American Riviera, before culminating in the glitzy city of Los Angeles where you can shop-til-you-drop at Rodeo Drive's designer boutiques, this holiday to California can be experienced at any time of year, thanks to the states’ Mediterranean-style climate.

The St. Regis San Francisco

+

Arrive in San Francisco for your stay at The St. Regis San Francisco. San Francisco is such a history-laden and photogenic destination, that you'll definitely require the entire first three days of this itinerary to even scratch its iconic surface. For a start, there are the eclectic neighbourhoods to discover: Haight-Ashbury for its iconic Victorian architecture − the area was also the creative epicentre of the city during the 1960s and even has a Psychedelic History Museum; fashionable Nob Hill for the best city views from its elevated vantage point, also home to Lombard Street, which has earned the monicker, 'The Crookedest Street in the World'; popular Fisherman's Wharf for its waterfront marketplaces and fantastic seafood restaurants, and Downtown Union Square, where you'll find the most exclusive designer boutiques and a plethora of 'ladies who lunch'. No trip to San Francisco, however, would be complete without a ride on one of its iconic cable-cars (trams), which are the last manually operated versions in the world. A more eerie, but must-see attraction, is the prison on infamous Alcatraz Island, located a mile-and-a-half off the coast, that is reachable by ferry. Of course, a drive across the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge should also be a given on your to-do list. There are unrivalled panoramas of the majestic San Francisco Bay from here. Lovers of the arts can enjoy a play in the theatre district or peruse the Museum of Modern art’s collection, and as you would expect from such a cosmopolitan city, there's also a wealth of fabulous gourmet dining restaurants to experience, plus a range of culinary walking tours for hardcore foodies.

Staying at

Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel

+

Leaving the coast behind, you may experience a bit of a culture shock as you head inland towards fast-paced and glitzy Los Angeles. There are many districts within this sprawling metropolis, and we've chosen to include one of its most glamorous on this itinerary − Beverly Hills. Staying at the iconic Beverly Wilshire, a Four Seasons Hotel, you'll be perfectly placed to enjoy a sophisticated stay. Whilst out and about, keep your eyes peeled for film stars as you shop at Rodeo Drive’s very best designer boutiques, dine at five-star gourmet restaurants or sip cocktails in the stylish bars. You can even take a tour of the areas where the rich and famous live. Beverly Hills has high-octane glamour at its stylish heart, but the district contributes so much more, including historic Greystone Mansion & Park, built in 1928 for the son of a prominent oil baron; the exquisite, six-acre Virginia Robinson Gardens − part of the estate of the one-time 'first lady of Hollywood', Virginia Robinson, who hosted Hollywood celebrities such as Fred Astaire at her legendary parties and card games; a selection of gourmet food shops and pretty parks. Without doubt, Hollywood, otherwise known as Tinseltown, has to be the most famous district in Los Angeles and here, you'll be able to immerse yourself in attractions such as Universal Studios, the Hollywood Bowl, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the nearby official Hollywood Museum, located in the Max Factor Building and housing an astonishing collection of movie memorabilia. You'll find some wonderful vantage points from which to view the iconic restored Hollywood sign too, including from Griffith Observatory and the surrounding Griffith Park hiking trails. Sports fans will enjoy the city's rich sporting heritage, iconic stadiums (home to the Dodgers, Lakers and, more recently, the MLS's LA Galaxy), along with the Sports Museum of LA, while music fans will appreciate visiting the home of Capitol Records, the Grammy Museum or enjoying a live concert.
